Lael Forest

(Average user rating5 unrated 4.5/5)

About Lael Forest

Lael is a large forest which was first planted with trees during the 1930's and 1940's.

Much of the woodland is now in its second rotation, i.e. the original trees have been felled and new trees planted in their place. During replanting, many more broadleaved trees such as oak, birch and rowan have been introduced to improve the habitat and diversity of the forest.

The main access path which leads up to Beinn Dearg and its neighbouring mountains runs through part of Lael Forest and is very popular with hill walkers.

How to get there:

Ullapool is the nearest town or village.

Lael Forest of situated beside the A835 road between Ullapool and Garve, some seven miles to the south of Ullapool.

The A835 is the main trunk road which links the Highland capital of Inverness with Ullapool - the main ferry terminal for access to the Outer Hebrides. A regular bus service runs between Inverness and Ullapool.

The Forest Garden is looking very neglected and is in need of basic maintenance such as clearing ditches and culverts. Some parts are flooded and water is creating erosion gullies where it is flowing down the paths. It saddens me to see this magnificent arboretum so uncared for when it used to be so well looked after.
