A secure future for our woodland resources - Finances for Woodland

Information on coppice workers in the region and their products has been added to a national Database of Coppice Products.  This web-based database allows users to search for coppice products.  It gives customers ready access to an enormous range of local products, from arbours to walking sticks, charcoal to furniture.  In addition, woodland owners and managers have an easy-to-use directory of local coppice workers, including contact details and information about the services that they can provide.

Farmer Gow’s offers a wide range of activities for children (0-99 years) ranging from meeting farm animals, to yards where children can climb hay bales and pilot pedal-powered diggers and tractors.  Hengrove Wood is one of the attractions on the farm. With grant support from the Forestry Commission and snout power from the farm’s woodland based pigs, new glades are being created, woodland edges cleared and re-planted and woodland rides widened.   The work is increasing the naturally diverse ancient woodland structure and therefore it’s bio-diversity. The widening of rides is also enabling better access to the woodland by foot and by trailer ride.

First-time pedestrian visitors are encouraged and escorted along way-marked walks through the woodland to find and feed the pigs.  Thereafter they are able to follow the trails themselves and attempt a woodland quiz.  The seasonal tractor-pulled trailer rides pass through the woodland, weather and terrain permitting, and are a popular activity particularly on children’s birthday parties.  Further work is planned to create and improve access for wheelchairs and pushchairs into the woodland, as is a ‘tree house’ for budding explorers.
