Heathland and mature pines at Two Mile Bottom in Thetford forest. East Anglia FDThetford Forest is the UK's largest man made lowland forest with 18,730 hectares to explore.  It's patchwork of pines, heathland and broadleaves provide the ideal setting for a great day out, and a welcome refuge for a rich variety of animal and plant life.

The forest covers a huge area with many different places to visit offering a range attractions from the exciting outdoor play facilities at High Lodge, the history and heritage of Mildenhall Warren and Lynford Arboretum and the peace and tranquility of the walks around St Helen's.  Select Places to Visit in Thetford Forest from the side menu to find out more.

What do other visitors say?

We are a family party of 8 adults spending a weekend based in Pullham Market 27th and 28th October. We have one dog and weather permitting would like to walk in Thetford forest for just a few hours. Can you provide us with a nice route and where to park. Will there be a place to buy refreshments or do we take something with us. Thank you Ninette

We do not have woodlands near to Pulham Market but the closest Forest Centre is High Lodge (IP24 0AF). There are a number of waymarked trails, car parks and a Café where refreshments can be purchased. Alternatively there is a large main field where you can enjoy your own picnic. Forestry Commission Response

Hi I have been told you have byways or greenlanes for motorised vehicles around the perimeter of the forest can you tell me if this is so and do you have maps

Colin barber, 26/Aug/2018

Please visit the Norfolk County Council or Suffolk County Council Highways websites as there are maps available of byways open to all traffic.

Forestry Commission Response

Hi I am looking at holding a small team event close by and would like to finish the day off in Sept with a few ball games and a picnic. Could you tell me the best place area to have this and are BBQ's allowed ( i would suspect not but thought i would ask)

Lisa Bristow, 25/Jun/2018

Thank you for your enquiry. No BBQ's are permitted on Forestry Commission land due to the massive loss of British Timer that a fire can cause. At present we are on High Fire Alert so it is even more important that this is observed. Any organized event on Forestry Commission land requires a permit. You can find out more here: If you are just having a small social gathering (under 30 people)then you are welcome to use one of our picnic sites or visit High Lodge who offer BBQ's for hire in a more controlled environment. Visit the Thetford Forest page for where to visit.
