Visited for first time yesterday. Was lovely and plenty of room for the kids to run around. The park was fab and had one very tired out toddler by the end of our trip. Will definately be returning.

Visited for the first time and despite the cold and snow we really enjoyed ourselves. My 6 year old daughter and her friend had a great time exploring the forest for the Highway Rat, and loved the play area. Plenty of areas to picnic at and walking / cycle trails to explore so we'll definitely be back.

We love the refurbished cafe and have had great fun at Go Ape as well as using all the walking trails. A great day out for families.

Enjoyed a family get together Bank Holiday Monday which was fabulous. Parking was difficult, drove round twice but only to be expected on such a glorious day, well worth the parking charge. Ice creams from the van were delicious and great service from the cafe staff serving our coffee. All in all a fabulous day.

I am responding, as a regular visitor of the Forest of Dean for the past 20 years, to the post about car park charges. I actually have a seasonal pass, but all the same this small daily charge gives access to some of the most stunning, natural landscape we can enjoy in our country. I heard one lady say today at Mallards Pike - 'I've been to many places, but nothing beats this'. If we can pay 30.00 + to enter an amusement park where the profits coat the pockets of individuals, can we not pay a mere 5.00 towards the upkeep of our natural landscape, re-planting trees, providing natural habitats for wildlife, for the benefit of future generations. A day can be easily filled for so little by watching, listening and looking beyond our normal expectations.

We regularly visit Beechenhurst, and many of the other FC sites in the forest, and we love it. With 2 children, 4 and 5, it fantastic to have such a great resource on our doorstep. Parking is steep, but we bought a Pass, and it is great value for money. The kids love the play area, which suits all ages, and we love that we can get a cuppa! Great for walks and jumping in puddles, too. My little boy has also honed his scooting and cycling skills here. A great place all round.

Used to be a regular visitor, went today and shocked at the increase in price for parking! It used to be 3.50 now its 5. How can you justify that much of an increase? Was disapointed last year when you got rid of the best walk (speculation trail), don't like the sculpture trail as too manmade and not natural paths. Cafe is too expensive. Don't have a reason now to visit again, very disapointed!

Anonymous, 9/Jul/2017

The charges only apply at the biggest visitor sites where there is more infrastructure; at Beechenhurst, Symonds Yat, Mallards Pike, Cannop Cycle Centre and Wenchford, there are still a large number of other Forestry Commission car parks in the Forest of Dean which are free at the point of entry. The new tariff charges have added flexibility for those only visiting for a few hours. Beechenhurst Peak charges Up to 2 hours £3 2-4 hours £4 All Day £5 Regular visitors can purchase an annual discovery pass for £30, this is great value for money as it provides parking for the year in the Forest of Dean and includes lots of offers and discounts including 10% off at Beechenhurst Café.

Please can you advise if the Gruffalo trail is currently available?

Helen, 6/May/2017

The Gruffalo Spotters trail is here until the autumn. Download the app at home before you visit and make sure your phone or tablet is fully charged.

Its really hard to find your way around properly - the route markers need to be clearer. Please do this Forrestry Commission as its a common complaint from people, but simple to resolve.

Anonymous, 21/Apr/2017

Thank you for your feedback, we have recently renewed our route markers at Beechenhurst, walks leaflets can also be purchased from the café and from the rangers hatch.

What a beautiful setting. Our intention was to take the Beechenhurst 8 Mile walk. But the way markers either stop or are impossible to find. We ended up following a route of our own, but only 9km. It wasn't obvious in the cafe where maps were located for purchase. We will re visit but will try and organise route maps in advance

Yvonne, 19/Feb/2017

Thank you for your feedback, glad you enjoyed your visit even without a map! They are usually found on the counter in the café, hope to see you on site again soon.

Visited the sculpture trail for the first time, brilliant! However, what causes the yellow colour in one of the ditches? We were going up hill to The Echo and the stream next to the road was heavily stained yellow even though the water was clear. Thanks

Ed, 20/Jan/2017

Thank you! Great to hear you enjoyed your first visit. The coloured staining in this area is due to Iron Ore which appears naturally in the ground and can be found in other areas in the Forest of Dean.

Hi are dogs welcome here? Also is there any Christmas events taking place as looking for something different for my 7 and 9yr old.

Sarah Shepherd , 29/Nov/2016

Yes, we welcome well behaved dogs :-) We have a Christmas Trail you can follow with information about different trees along the way and why the species we all know and love as Christmas Trees are the best!

I walked The Sculpture Trail with a Canadian friend & one from Bristol & my dog today, the first time for about 15 years I have to say we were quite disappointed with the sculptures - not as many or as good as my memories The sign posting was a little confusing & we couldn't find all the sculptures mentioned in the leaflet which I bought for 1 and thought it was too expensive as was poor quality (not like the previous maps!) There was only one dog poo bin right at the end and I think there should me more if you want to encourage people to clear up after their dogs We had 3 coffees & 2 soup & rolls in the cafe which cost 16.20 which we thought was expensive

Rosemary Smith , 23/Nov/2016

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit, we are sorry to hear that you found the signage confusing. The Sculpture Trust are working on the idea of a new Sculpture for 2017. A shortened downloadable version of the Sculpture Trail map will be available soon, details will be posted on the website and Facebook page.

Please keep dogs under control had uncomfortable visit today with not 1 but 2 I'd class potentially dangerous dogs loose out of control on the stickman trail not able to relax with a 3 and 5 year old

Lee, 29/Oct/2016

We are very sorry to hear that loose dogs upset your visit to Beechenhurst. We do say that all dogs must be under control - this very hard to manage. When our rangers see people with dogs out of control they do talk to the owner concerned. Thank you for your feedback.

I echo Rachel's comments above about Breath of Fresh Air. I hope something similar starts up soon. Tuesday's won't be the same!

Claire, 19/Oct/2016

We are working towards bringing in a new learning provider for Spring 2017 - keep an eye on our Beechenhurst Facebook page for further information next year.

Forestry Commission Response

I'm very disappointed to hear A Breath of Fresh Air will cease at Beechenhurst. I had only taken my two toddlers to one session and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Why is it stopping? They said it was a forestry commission decision.

rachael, 23/Sep/2016

Thank you for your comments and we're pleased you've enjoyed the sessions. The Forestry Commission is committed to ensuring that there will be a learning provider based at Beechenhurst following an application process as soon as possible.

I'm a regular walker in the Forest but on Sunday I had to park my car there. There has been a degree of rearrangement of the roadways and it was CHAOS! Lots of signs saying 'No entry' or 'No exit' (I forget which), but there is a clear need for EXIT signage telling drivers how to get out of the place. There was almost gridlock in places where several vehicles had driven into a dead end and then had no room to turn around and get out.

Ann O'Neemus, 20/Jul/2016

Brand new while lines/arrows/words have been painted on the roads in the car park so this should help confusion!

Hi,

I visited Beechenhurst Lodge today with family and was very impressed. However, I wonder if you could answer a question - my Dad lost his jumper ( a marron/red v-necked one) somewhere along the Sculpture Trail route, or possibly the mens toilets. I can't find a phone number to see if anyone handed it in? If so I could go back to re-claim it. Can you help please? Thanks in advance, Belinda

Belinda , 29/May/2016

sorry, we haven't had this handed in.

Today I visited your beechenhurst lodge site with friends and family. We had a great time. However, we stopped for lunch and a young collie was round our table for a while, we assumed it belonged to the couple at the other table. However once they left it was obvious that was not so.

There was another family some distance away and no-one else around. At this point after about 20 mins we were becoming increasingly concerned. There was no collar or identification, which may I add is illegal.

One of our group rang to try and trace a dog warden and two of us had a walk around to try and track the owner.

We eventually found out she belonged to the person running the climbing wall, who was very rude to me. He stated in a rather abrupt manner that she couldn't get out as their was a cattle grid.

Aside from collies being able to jump grids and fences I have several concerns. Firstly had my dogs been with me that day all hell would have broken loose as they are dog aggressive and always kept on leads, secondly she was running all over the place and there are plenty of signs asking the public to clean after their dogs but he wouldn't have had a clue, thirdly she was running up to groups of children playing ball. Whilst she seemed friendly enough the children may have had fears or allergies etc.

After working in kennels a significant amount of time myself this is a very lazy and selfish act of ownership. The general consensus was my dog is fine so I don't care if she's causing problems for you. Yes she is a lovely dog but it's a very selfish and irresponsible thing to not keep her close and from approaching other dogs, which she was doing and messing everywhere.

Also to be so rude and abrupt when we were simply concerned and checking she wasn't abandoned, lost, escaped from nearby. We were more concerned for the well fair of that animal and I couldn't knowingly leave without making sure she was ok.

Great way to lead by example forestry commission.

Catherine Jago, 29/Apr/2016

Glad you had a good day! The new café area has taken over what was the shop area too so there won't be a shop as such. The café will sell leaflets/guides and possibly some other relevant things as they choose/have room for but not much.

Had some great days here and there is always something to do on a genuine family day out without any huge expense, just make own fun, getting dirty playing in the forest.

Anonymous, 9/Apr/2016

Sign-posting to Beechenhurst in the local area is poor.

On the day we visited with two grandsons, specifically to follow the Stickman Trail, no activity packs were available, and we were advised to 'make up our own activity'.

Anonymous, 2/Apr/2016

We are working with Highways to install further Brown Signs. The rangers have been informed about the Stickman Packs and yes, due to its popularity, the packs were sold out over the Easter holidays and have been replenished since.

Took the kids out for a walk along the beechenhurst paths. My review on the stick man trail, likewise with the Gruffallo trail was a bit disappointing, as I think we should be encouraging kids not to look at plastic signs in these woods, but at the real wildlife thats going on. It was quite upsetting to see the kids transfixed by cartoon charecters when we'd gone all the way to the great outdoors to get away from all that. My opinion goes with the rest of the sculpture trail as well, we come to the forest of dean to see the wood, not artworks that people think we want to look at, but generally, always a pleasure to be in the forest of dean, Thanks

We visited to do the Stickman trail which the 2 grandchildren enjoyed. It was very busy with visitors being a sunny day in half term. However the other activities ie craft were mostly outdoors or room for only 2 in a tiny tent. As we had more rain than usual in the weeks previously so the "caf"/activity area was thick with mud. I would have thought that better temporary facilities would have been provided eg a large marquee. It was very cold, although sunny, and the queue for hot drinks was very long. I would have thought the revenue for the catering would have gone a long way to paying for better protection. Hope the new caf is completed soon as have always enjoyed these visits previously!!!

Thank you for your feedback - numbers at these events are very unpredictable - your comments have been forwarded to the team involved.

We're planning tinting our daughter and friends to tree top junior for her birthday and wondered if we are able to bring our own picnic/snack food along and if so, are we allowed to use the cafe for this if it's raining or is there covered seating areas for this situation??

Anonymous, 7/Mar/2016

Yes please do bring your own picnic etc. The café is closed for refurbishment at present, building works are ongoing, we have a temporary mobile café at the moment - there aren't covered eating areas but there are some big trees!

Forestry Commission Response

I am thinking of visiting for the children to do the junior go ape, can anyone tell me if under 6s need adult per child or can 1 adult take 3 under 6s on there?

After having a lovely walk around the Stick man trail, we decided to have a drink at the cafe. What a big mistake that was, having to wait 25mins for drinks was not acceptable. I know they were busy, but this could have been managed a lot better. After waiting this long the drinks were lukewarm. Both myself and my husband are in the catering business and this was a disgrace. Will not be using again. It's no wonder people were asking for there money back, I wish we had of done. It would have been quicker for us to drive back to Ross on Wye .

Mrs Drew-White, 14/Feb/2016

Thank you for your comment, the current catering offer is temporary and operating from a limited space until the new Beechenhurst café opens in the summer, we are sorry to hear of your experience - the comments will be fed back to the caterers.
