Wondering if it's a strict no-running policy on the cycling paths. Anything that's more challenging in terms of trail running is very far for me, so I was hoping if I was keeping to the side (and my wits about me) that I might be able to run part of it? Thank you!

Hiya, enquiring in which part of Thetford forest you would have more chance if seeing a red deer /stag, keen photographer and would like to set up for the day in one part of Thetford forest, I'm guessing dusk and Dawn best times to.

s Donovan, 6/May/2018

Hi ,I recently purchased a metal detector and would just like to know if its okay to detect in the forest? Not in the high lodge area but lynford stag area and/or Santon Downham obviously will be respectful of the surroundings and will fill in any small holes made. Cheers

Anonymous, 23/Apr/2018

Thank you for contacting us about metal detecting. Unfortunately metal detecting is not permitted anywhere on the Public Forest Estate. There are a number of sensitive and protected heritage sites located around the forest where metal detecting would disturb archaeology and flora.

Love the walks in the forest. Can you explain why there are some paths that have numbers, and is there anywhere to buy a map which shows the numbered paths.

Joan Knock, 16/Apr/2018

The numbers refer to the forest rides which are there to help foresters record where trees are planted and also to allow the emergency services to access and locate fires or injured persons. Unfortunately we don't have a publically available map of the numbered rides as most of our maps are kept on computers due to their size.

Are you able to ride horses in the forest? Do you have hard atanding car parks to bring a horse trailer?

Anonymous, 13/Apr/2018

You are welcome to ride your horse in Thetford Forest. There are parking areas at Lynford Stag, St Helen's, Great Hockham, High Ash, West Stow, Kings Forest and Lynford Water. Please note that in other Forestry Commission forests you are required to buy a riding permit from TROT.

Hi. I am just wondering why all our woods and forests are in grids with wide tracks through them?

Is it so stupid people dont get lost?

Stuart, 16/Jan/2018

You are almost right. It does help forestry workers and members of the public not get lost as some forest rides have numbers and the blocks of trees have compartment numbers. It also helps us keep a record of what trees have been planted, how old they are and when they need to be harvested. Thetford Forest is only around 90 years old as it was planted as a timber resource for the country. When the first trees were planted, using a grid system (or compartments) it helped plan the lay out of the forest and allow access to the new trees along the rides to care for them. Often the old fields that were there before the forest were used to shape the compartments and if you can find a really old Ordnance Survey map from before the forest was planted, you might be able to spot the old field shapes in the layout of the forest. A natural forest would not have compartments or forest rides.

Would I be able to get a chain saw and cut up deadfallen trees, and use the wood in my fireplace at my house to stay warm this winter?

terry kelley, 11/Sep/2016

Thank you for checking this out with us. Unfortunately you are not allowed to use a chainsaw to cut up fallen trees on the public forest estate. Thetford Forest is a Special Protection Area for wildlife and fallen dead wood is valuable habitat. Timber grown on the estate is harvested under strict guidelines and sold to sustainably manage the forest for all. Unmanaged chainsaw activity in the forest would also place other forest users at risk.

Emma Roberts, 5/Aug/2016

Thank you for your idea. I'll pass it on to our Discovery Pass Team.

Visited high lodge yesterday for lunch unfortunately refurbishment was being carried out with a lot of noise, the toilet block was closed, had we known this in advance would have visited at a different time, and would not have wasted 2.20 for ten minutes parking.

Cleo, 12/Jan/2016

.

Hi, I've just come across your page by chance. - Wow, you're having a beautiful forest

Looks like the ones we have in Germany. Many forests over here are huge, solitary and silent. Providing you have chosen the proper route you can walk for a day without meeting anybody on your way.

The next time I'll be in Britain I'll be inspecting Thretford Forest ...

Kind regards,

Gnther

How much dose it cost for vans to park in the car park?
