Lovely walks and (mostly) good views. The heat coming from the rock underfoot in August is amazing. Side trail behind tea from has a good view westwards towards the village of Symonds Yet, but the river is partially obscured by growth of hazel and similar. Shame.

Fantastic views, with the meandering river Wye below. Plenty of parking space. Well stocked cafe. It has everything. My favourite location. I live in Devon but its still a place I visit regularly.

Kenneth Newton, 17/May/2016

Is the car par suitable for a 6.5m Motorhome?

Steve, 19/Apr/2016

The car park will be ok - you will need to park in coach space so get there early if in holidays. Car park is Pay and Display so bring change. NO OVERNIGHT stays permitted but Bracelands campsite is nearby. WARNING : you will NOT be able to drive any further down towards Symonds Yat East than the car park as the road becomes EXTREMELY narrow and bendy!

Query: I am bringing a coach party on the afternoon of 13 July - do I have to book a coach parking place?

We are thinking of visiting Symonds Yat Rock next week so i thought i'd have a look at some of the reviews....The 3.50 parking review made me smile - Extortionate! Really? where do you live - Mars!

Looking forward to our trip (and saving hard so i can afford to park)

We hope you enjoy the day - wear your walking boots for a beautiful walk down to the river Wye, and don't forget your binoculars!

A short walk to a spectacular view. Cheap parking, good facilities and easily accessible with a pram. Short, medium and longer walks available. Very well maintained.

Glad you enjoyed your visit.

1. Is there a charge for disabled parking?

2. Is it possible for a disabled scooter to access the Rock over the bridge, I am aware that it is not possible from the other side of the road due to the steps?

Philip Morris, 19/Dec/2015

Yes all vehicles must Pay and Display, £3.50 summer, £3.00 winter. Yes the route to the rock is completely accessible. enjoy your visit.

Symonds Yat Rock is a rip-off, a tourist trap and completely overrated. The parking fees for the day (!) of GBP 3.50 are extortionate, especially since it is not possible to pay by the hour or at least by the half day. We spent some 45 minutes there and although the view from the lookout was nice, it was not worth the money or the effort of getting there. Don't bother visiting - go to Wales instead!

Marianne, 7/Dec/2015

The revenue from the parking charge goes directly in to maintaining the site and facilities, toilets, signage, path surfacing, grass-cutting, provision of site furniture, and litterpicking. The parking ticket can be used at all our pay and display sites in the Forest of Dean on the same day.

Forestry Commission Response

We took some international visitors and they appreciated the beautiful views. Note for other visitors: Symonds Yat Rock is not signposted from the main road so it's important to take the turn off to Symonds Yat EAST (and not Symonds Yat West). Follow signs firstly to Symonds Yat East and then to Yat Rock.

This'll get you close:

5150′53″N 238′35″W / 51.848N 2.643W

Most sat navs will accept coordinates or you could do the old-school map reading thing.

Adrian C, 11/Sep/2015

Don't use the postcode - it's 5 miles away from Symonds Yat Rock.

We didn't have change for the car park, so walked to the cafe to purchase something, get change and pay for our parking ticket. On returning to our car after 15 minutes, a parking ticket had been stuck on our windscreen. FC are obviously paying people to lie in wait. Disgusting.

Not given, 19/Jul/2015

We do state on our website that visitors are encouraged to bring change for the car park. It is unusual for us to ticket within the 15 minute courtesy time.

Would it be a good idea to have an address for this Symonds Yat Rock, perhaps a post code would help is it near the Dean Forest please?

We parked at Symonds Yat yesterday, bank holiday Monday, and enjoyed most of our trip.

However the loos were disgusting, hadn't been cleaned recently and there was no toilet paper in most of the ladies loos.

I realise the cafe may be a franchise but no one was bothering to remove the dirty trays from the picnic benches. A pity when the area is so beautiful.

Mary Leonard, 26/May/2015

We are so sorry to hear your comments, Bank Holiday was particularly busy as you were aware. Our rangers do visit all our sites throughout the day and they were very busy - these comments will be shown to the rangers and to the cafe manager.

Great visit. Wonderful view. Had my scope trained on a female peregrine for ages. Many other visitors were able to have a look. We were also fortunate to see a goshawk sat is a tree opposite. Will return!

I visited Symonds Yat Rock early on the morning of 23 September. The sun was shining and the view was glorious. I was impressed by the approach to the Rock, the parking, the paths and the viewing platform were all well laid-out and managed. I appreciated the well-marked trails and information, particularly the board of information on the geology of the area. But why could I not purchase a copy of this information at the Log Cabin? I took a photo of some of the information, but a small leaflet would have been better. Is this available from the Forestry Commission?
