Your comments on Tackeroo Site

1 Star 1 Star

We have been caravanning at Tackeroo for over 10 years now and it has got worse every year. This is not due to the forest but to the awful management of the site. We cannot come this year as it is only open for 77 days (out of 365!) and the dates open are nearly all during school term time. How is this fair? To top it off you have put the prices up 50% from 10 a night to 15 a night. If you opened for longer then you would get a decent revenue from caravanners as more people could go and the prices would not have to be increased. Also the times you are open (when we went last year) are that overcrowded it has become unpleasant with loud parties and fires and singing all night! We felt intimidated and threatened by people running near our caravan screaming and shouting at 2am but it was too dark and late for us to leave. We didnt dare sleep all night! There was no emergency number to call for the ranger and had to wait until the following day to complain. Maybe the increased price would pay for a better presence from the rangers to stop any drunken behaviour and generators until midnight! If you were open longer then people wouldnt all flock there on the same weekend and would be more spread out over the year. I also think we should be able to book and pay a deposit to secure a place. It might stop the overcrowding and stop people leaving before the rangers come round thus avoiding payment. Tackeroo used to be a lovely relaxing family site to enjoy the wildlife and scenery but the way it has been handled now is a travesty! Any other public site or amenity that received all these negative comments would pull their fingers out and address the problems! Reading all your replies to other comments shows me you cannot and will not change the way Tackeroo is managed. I dont expect I will get a thorough reply just your usual generic crap!

Thank you for your feedback. The decision to only accommodate camping on the site for a limited period of the year has only been taken after careful consideration of how we make best use of everything we have to offer in the Cannock area. When not used for camping, Tackeroo is used for events and other activities. The running of events in this area of woodland are part of Forestry Commission objectives to provide more opportunities for people to benefit from the forest by participating in sport, community, social, health and wellbeing activities with money generated being invested back into forest management. During times when Tackeroo is not open for camping and caravanning you can contact local tourism information who will be able to advise you on other campsites available. Camping fees for Tackeroo have not been increased in over 7 years, however due to ongoing increases in operating costs we have had to increase camping fees to allow us to maintain high standards. We have not been aware of issues of overcrowding at Tackeroo, and we do not have designated pitches to allow visitors to choose their own. As with most visitor attractions we experience peak demands around public holidays, which is why we have extended our opening dates to include school term times for people who enjoy visiting during quieter times. If you feel unsafe on our site you can contact the police by calling 101, or in an emergency 999, and then make our Rangers aware during working hours (currently 8am – 4pm).

I don't know what's worse, the fact that the site isn't open for half the year or the fact that the replies to these comments just get an generic reply!

Mountain biker., 9/Jan/2018

Called for a walk around takeroo park at christmas, nearly made a grown man cry. Trees cut down and hundreds of tons of logs stacked for removal, land covered in discarded branches mud bogs and land damage from bulldozer / logging machinery. You can now see all of the power station at Rugeley and the town itself once hidden by natures beautiful forest. Nearly got run over by mountain bike riders on 3 occasions. The foresty commison likes mountain bikers becuase they generate money, like pop concerts logging and forest weddings etc. Dont think i ever want to back to the chase, oh how times have changed, 3 cheers for the modern money making im alright world.

Former chase fan., 2/Jan/2018

Cannock Chase Forest is not only a wonderful place for a walk but it’s also a working forest, producing around 20,000 tonnes of sustainable timber each year. We have Forest Design plans for all our forests which set our management proposals; these can be viewed on our website. These highlight when areas will be thinned, felled and then re-planted. Damage caused from these operations will be fixed once all timber has been removed from site. With regards to your mountain bike incidents, we ask all visitors to be respectful and courteous of each other on multi-user trails and apologies that in this case this did not happen. Car park income from Birches Valley car park and money generated from events such as Forest Live goes back into looking after Cannock Chase Forest for people and wildlife both now and into the future.

Like many others I cannot see the logic of keeping a campsite closed during peak holiday periods and I shall remain unconvinced no matter how many times you quote the official party line. Many of these other activities could take place elsewhere........there is only one Tackeroo

Barbara Sears, 22/Aug/2017

Tackeroo is an area that lends itself to these events as it offers a place away from busy Visitor Centres. The running of events in this area of woodland are part of Forestry Commission objectives to provide more opportunities for people to benefit from the forest by participating in sport, community, social, health and wellbeing activities with money generated being invested back into forest management.

Money money money its not funny

we have nowhere to stay.

Can we buy foresty enterprise shares you must make a fortune.

Was born in Hednesford and until recently loved to come back to Takeroo each summer, thanks for ruining our summer holidays. It needs someone to start a petition to start and get things sorted. Us caravaners and campers need a voice in this wilderness of high profit management. Whats next ? selling of the deer to a burger chain.

Such a fantastic facility but its being needlessly wasted by closing for the entirety of the summer season. There are no events today but officially the site is closed.

The running of events in this fashion may be part of the Forestry Commission's objectives to benefit people through eventual reinvestment but an incredible facility is clearly being squandered on a daily basis just to facilitate a few isolated events.

The running of events in this area of woodland are part of Forestry Commission objectives to provide more opportunities for people to benefit from the forest by participating in sport, community, social, health and wellbeing activities with money generated being invested back into forest management. To set up the infrastructure for some of these events, and then take it down can last a few days, so to allow this to take place safely the site remains closed for public camping.

Forestry Commission Response

I think it's time to write a letter to the local MP regarding your mismanagement of OUR local facility. Stop the culture of block booking the summer season for weddings. I'm sure you can find another location for your corporate activities.

Forestry Commission Response

Using the only public camping site on Cannock Chase for commercial events and money making schemes such as weddings is reducing the general publics opportunity to enjoy the Chase. There are plenty locations that could be utilised for such events however Tackeroo is the only public camping site. Cherry pickering the peak summer period has left us without this valuable local leisure facility. It is also worth noting that the site has remained closed regardless of whether there is a event on or not.

Why close during the 6 weeks holiday? This is not right for the campers and children, stay open, bulls showers and toilets and it could make a killing loads of people like it there

I don't understand why close it? It runs itself, the ranger collects the money, what's so hard about keeping it open? Does this mean I'm allowed to camp over the road in the car park? 2VT

echo the comments above. understand you might have other events that use tackeroo but the balance is not right...no general camping for the WHOLE of the summer ????? you will get lots of unauthorised camping at various places in the forest / car parks now.

Site great but shut from end of June to October 22nd, by which time its the end of the season anyway, and its shut until Easter next year, what a joke. Had so many good times here but as time has marched on forestry commission only happy to make loads of money ie cut down trees or hold music concerts.Might as well just shut site to caravaners, its now hoards of posh cycling clubs, with the requisite very expensive bicycles whizzing through the site anyway that its not as peaceful as it used to be.Was planning a getaway for my birthday in June this year and was stunned to find out it would be shut, rang up and was told that the website was correct and i had to lump it as they had other things planned for the year, the person i was connected to was very abrupt and basically made me feel like it was an imposition to put a caravan on a caravan site when they could make more money another way.

Each time my family have stayed at tackeroo on a winter caravan rally it has been fantastic. Each time we have visited on the summer rally ( which was also open to "all" it was like an inner city riot at times. Fires everywhere screaming and shouting all night long idiots driving around the site like it was a race circuit. Constant swearing and aggressive behaviour.

If you miss tackeroo then blame the idiots that ruined for you.

Why is tacker not open from 10th June until 23rd October? This is redicuolous 4 months best time of the year it's closed . How do you expect to gain revenue with such poor management . Events are not on for months solid . I will refer this to the local MP see what they think next time your looking for extra revenue .

Tackeroo was used for camping over a period of many months, the concert venue is used for only a few days each year why cant events be held there

Anonymous, 21/Sep/2016

Thank you for your comments. The decision has only been taken after careful consideration of how we make best use of everything we have to offer in the Cannock area. Our Visitor Centre attracts over 400,000 visits per year and hosting some events here would not be viable. We will continue to review how to make best use of the Tackeroo site in delivering our objectives for people, nature and the local economy but in the short term we do not anticipate increased opening times.

is there a viable usable path for disabled wheel chair users to get from Birches Valley to Fairoak pools or a handy car park

Hi, you can follow the Fairoak Trail to access the Fairoak pools from Birches Valley. The trail is surfaced and way marked with green arrows.

We have missed not being able to use the forest for camping this year. It has in the past been a real pleasure to bring our children and enjoy the beauty of the woodlands for walking and cycling.

It seems that the profit generated by weddings party's rally's or whatever it is you are doing instead is more important to the current management than opening up the facility for normal family use as it should be.

The camping site is large enough to cater for general camping as well as functions on the same day, it is also to be considered that campers use the facility more by staying throughout the week not only at weekends.

Please consider all of the forests users in the coming years and maybe consider letting out the management of the site if it is using too many of your resources.

Kind Regards

Utterly eye-watering decision to close for so long over the summer. This is not a sensible decision. Perhaps you can list the "events" planned for this period so we can truly see how busy you are? REMEMBER YOUR REMIT "We are the government department responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands and increasing their value to society and the environment." You do not seem to be living up to this at all.
