Feel good this autumn with activity sheets, forest trails and our mindfulness guide.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along a waymarked route, go on a long-distance horse ride or discover the forest by bike.

There is a family picnic area with plenty of picnic tables and there are also some barbecues which are free to use.

Exciting Business Opportunity at Great Wood for a Mobile Catering and Refreshments Unit at Ramscombe.

The Forestry Commission is inviting Expressions of Interest in the provision of a mobile catering and refreshment unit at Ramscombe, Great Wood.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to enhance our visitor experience, to serve refreshments and food at one of our busiest visitor centres in the South West.

...Initially the agreement will be for 1 year with the option for extension.

See our Business Opportunities page for more details.

Explore Great Wood on the Red Walk

Spend some time exploring the nooks and crannies of Great Wood and admire some majestic Douglas fir along the 2 mile red walk, which is ideal for families.

Cycling

Bring your bike and head out into the forest for a leisurely cycle.  We don't have waymarked cycle routes but there are plenty of bridleways and forest roads to explore on two wheels.

Horse riding

Explore the forest on horse back.

BBQ area

Enjoy a BBQ or relaxing picnic with the family.

Wildlife

Great Wood is a wonderful place to spot a variety of wildlife such as Red Deer, Ravens, Buzzards, Pied Flycatchers, Crossbills and a lot more besides.

Organising an event

If you wish to organise an event on Forestry Commission land you will need our permission. We need to check that the event is properly organised, has adequate insurance cover and doesn't clash with other events or forest operations. Please give as much notice as possible, we require at least eight weeks. Other activities may also require permission, including dog sleds, charity challenges and walking events.

There is a small events room available to hire at Great Wood, which is suitable for groups such as schools, youth groups and organisations running activities in the forest.

Download this application form to hold an event in Great Wood, or alternatively please call us on 0300 067 4800.  Send your completed form to permissions.westengland@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or send to West England Forest District Permissions, Bank House, Coleford, Glos, G116 8BA
