Rubén joint Forest Research in November 2016. He obtained his PhD degree from the Technical University of Madrid (Spain) in 2013. From 2013 to 2016, he worked in the INRA - Nancy (France). Most of Rubén's research has focused on empirical modelling for forestry applications, forest inventory and uncertainty assessment.

Current role

Rubén's current role comprises two major areas of expertise:

  1. Empirically modelling different tree and wood properties (e.g. knot geometry and volume) of the main productive species and the integration of these models in the timber properties decision support system for Great Britain to enable wider use by forestry professionals and scientists.
  2. The rapid development of new detection technologies based on laser scanning (LiDAR) to extract precise information on the size and shapes of tree stems and branches. Rubén currently focuses on the geometrical analysis of point cloud data issued from Terrestrial Laser Scanning, but with the aim to link these ground based metrics with airborne ones to have a more complete picture of forest stands.
