Forest Research research update (Autumn 2008)

What was the event?

Forest Research staff (and other researchers) updated forestry colleagues in the industry on selected current topics of interest to the practitioner, shared information and gained feedback.  Topics of practical relevance were included as well as topics that are current in the development and support of policy:

  • Introduction and engaging with Forest Research
  • Priority species programme
  • Tree breeding – new directions
  • Use of remote sensing to assist managers to develop forest plans
  • Ground preparation, species selection, and restock establishment – techniques and new tools
  • The sustainability of the European forestry wood chain – a Scottish dimension
  • Forests in society – including the recent report on the Valuation of the economic and social contribution of forestry for people in Scotland.
