Tom joined the Forestry Commission in 2011. He has a BSc in environmental science and an MSc in environmental informatics, both from Lancaster University. Prior to joining the Forestry Commission, Tom worked for Esri in the USA for 3 years where he specialised in using relational database management systems for managing spatial data. Tom’s skills are in data management, data quality and analysis processes for both spatial and non-spatial data.

Current role

Geospatial Data Manager for the National Forest Inventory (NFI)
Tom is responsible for the NFI's field survey databases, field data collection software and the data quality checking and analysis processes used prior to reporting.

Currently Tom is helping to develop new tools and scripting processes to analyse change in woodlands using the data being gathered from the 2nd Cycle of the NFI surveys and comparing it to the 1st Cycle assessment of the same location.

Additionally, Tom is responsible for the annual reporting process from the Forestry Commission's sub-compartment database, which involves managing the quality of forest inventory data maintained locally in forest districts and producing reports on the public forest estate for a valuation exercise carried out for Forestry Commission England and Scotland each April.
