Christine joined the Forestry Commission in 1990 as a Cartographer within Forest Surveys, Forest Research. Via various roles she moved from traditional Cartography to GIS and became Mapping & Geodata Manager in 2010. Christine completed her MSC in GIS and Remote Sensing via part-time study at the University of Edinburgh in 2008.

Current role

Mapping and Geodata Manager (Edinburgh)

  • Manage the staff, work and resources for the Mapping & Geodata team based in Silvan House, Edinburgh, providing a range of geographic data and services.
  • Provide advice on remote sensing applications and carry out analysis of remote sensing imagery for IFOS and wider FC.

Current projects

GeoSpatial Data Management

  • Manage and support staff to maintain provision of FC and external GI datasets to FC wide GIS users.

Data Capture

  • Manage current data capture programmes:
    • FC Utilities
    • FES Open Habitat

Remote Sensing

  • Use of eCognition software and Sentinel 2 NIR imagery to identify felled and windblow areas.
  • Manage staff to update National Forest Inventory woodland map by carrying out GIS validation of areas of change identified by remote sensing analysis.
  • Develop existing woodland change processes by working with DEFRA network via the Earth Observation Data Integration Pilot (EODIP) and others.
  • Identify potential future applications of remote sensing data.

End of Year (EOY) reporting and reconciliation

  • GIS reconciliation between Sub-Compartment Database (SCDB) and Deed Management System (DMS)
