Merchantability of Noble fir, Norway spruce, western red cedar and western hemlock

Logs of wood in a yardThis project aims to provide information to growers and processors about the merchantable volume and wood properties of these species. An assessment of the wood properties will be shortly published.

Material from each of the four species was obtained in different growing regions of the UK. Forest stands were even-aged single species plantations. Assessment were made on standing and felled trees to quantify merchantability, and timber samples were collected and tested to provide information about the grade determining wood properties.
