Society and diversity in relation to trees, woods and forests


The research in this work area picks up these ideas and is concerned with understanding how different groups of people engage with trees, woods and forests (TWF), and how they benefit from that engagement.

There are five broad themes in this programme area:

  • Engagement: Public engagement with forest and woodland decision making and planning processes.  The impacts and benefits of different forms of engagement. Engagement tools and methods including social media and emerging approaches such as citizen science.
  • Employment: Skills and employment issues as they relate to the forestry sector.
  • Equality: Diversity and equality monitoring of forestry projects and programmes including understanding of social differentiation in patterns of access, use and impact.
  • Enterprise: Understanding the development of small-scale, community-based and social enterprises linked to woods and forests.
  • Segmentation and Spatial Analysis: Segmentation and behaviour of users/non-users/potential users of woods and forests, and the spatially referenced societal level distribution of impacts and benefits from woods and forests.
