Permission Charges

The Public Forest Estate is managed by the Forestry Commission on behalf of the nation. Informal access for the general public is free, but we do charge a fee for some events and activities to cover genuine staff costs and help us to manage the forest in the best way possible.

Charges help cover the provision of facilities such as trails and public toilets as well as event administration and safety monitoring.

National Agreements

The Forestry Commission has some national agreements with a few organising bodies. If you are organising an event on behalf of one of these organisation, please refer to your organisation agreement. Examples include;

British Horse Society

British Orienteering agreement

Drag Hunting

Military Training

Ordnance Survey

RAC Motor Sports Association Ltd.



Standard Charges


A minimum administration charge is applicable for all permissions unless otherwise stated.

                                     £50 + VAT

(Up to 5 events can be registered under one administration charge at time of application.)

Please note that VAT should be added to all charges unless otherwise stated and standard car parking charges will apply. 

Competitive Events

The fees below cover queries such as biking, running, horse riding & adventure race enquiries.

Local/Club Events                          £50 Admin + £1 per participant    Local competition, less than 150 participants, do not require exclusive use of facilities or significant FC staff time.

Regional Events                              £100 Admin + £2 per participant Competition or larger participation events, part of a regional series or attracting participants from outside of local catchment.

National/Commercial events        £100 Admin + £2.50 per participant Large participation or drawing participants from wide catchment. 

Other events and activities

The Forestry Commission permits a range of other activities to take place on the land, such as archery, husky training, commercial ecological studies, hot air ballooning, bee hives, commercial photography, manufacturer demonstration days etc. Please contact us for charges.

Car parks and buildings are occasionally hired out for events, please enquire.

Charity Charges

Low impact          Free (low numbers / low staff time)

High impact         Administration Charge (high numbers / high staff time)

NB. Events must be directly delivered by registered charities, with valid certification of status.

Where events are not directly delivered by a charity, i.e. an events company, the following charges will apply.

  • Formal facilities          0-49    Free
  • Formal facilities          50+     Administration charge
  • Non-formal facilities              Administration + £1 per participant(Marquee, toilet hire etc.)
