Parkrun is coming to Whinlatter!

Runner in Pitfichie forestParkrun will be starting at Whinlatter towards the end of August and is a weekly timed 5k run that is free to take part in for everyone regardless of ability.

We will need the help of approximately 10 volunteers each Saturday morning from view of the mountains beyond Whinlatter Forest8.30 AM – approx. 10.45 AM. There will be lots of different roles from marshalling the route, timekeeping and scanning the finish line barcodes to back running and sweeping the end of the race to ensure everyone gets home.

Keswick Parkrun have kindly offered us the opportunity to train Whinlatter volunteers at their event before ours starts.

If you’re interested in helping or would like any further information please contact our Active Forest Coordinator, Sonia Dryden, sonia.dryden@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or call 017687 78127.

Parkrun is a fantastic organisation, more information about it can be found here: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/

Christmas Trees

Christmas Tree sales will begin at Whinlatter on 1 December.

For the last few years some of you kindly helped out and it would be great if you are able to assist us again this year.
This will involve unloading trees, helping visitors to choose a tree, wrapping trees etc.

Here are the dates when we’re looking for some extra help:

Saturday 2 December
Sunday 3 December
Saturday 9 December

Possibly also the following weekend, 16th and 17th December, but this will depend on weather and if we have any trees left!

Approximate times each day will be 11am – 3pm.

Please get in touch if you'd like to help out and let me know your preference for date.  We only need 2 to 3 volunteers each day so we will confirm which dates we would like your help after we’ve produced a rota based on everyone’s availability.

This can be physically demanding so please be prepared!  We will provide waterproofs, gloves, a tasty lunch and plenty of hot drinks and biscuits!

Practical conservation work days

Please note that work days may have different meeting points.

We’ve now confirmed dates for winter work days. Firstly we’ll carry out some surveys of areas previously planted by the group, then moving on to beating up (filling in any gaps where trees have failed) and removing any non-native species regeneration.  We also have some new areas to plant around the Sanderson Gill and Hobcarton areas of the forest.

Saturday 4 November – meet at Whinlatter Rangers’ office
Thursday 16 November – meet at Noble Knott car park
