Cycling and Cycle Trails at Alice Holt

Alice Holt offers a fantastic opportunity for natural cycling. Whatever your cycling ability there’s something for you to enjoy here as you explore this wonderful forest.

Young cyclists and family trails

Learn to ride your bike in the forest! Cycling in the forest is one of the safest and most relaxing ways to pick up confidence and develop cycling skills.

  • For those just starting out on two wheels, develop your skills on our short, safe All Ability Cycle Track .  You'll find this located just behind Playwood.
  • Our 3 mile Family Cycle Trail is suitable for both children and adults, offering all the family a chance to explore further into the forest. It passes through an interesting variety of woodland habitats, from conifer plantation to mature broadleaf interspersed with woodland clearings. Enjoy a picnic midway in one of the meadows along the route!

For your safety and the safety of other visitors please be aware of the following points:

  • Only cycle within your abilities.
  • Expect the unexpected – watch out for other visitors.
  • Always follow warning signs and any advice you are given.
  • If a vehicle is loading timber, stop and wait for the driver to let you pass safely.
  • It's advisable to have a bell on your bike to let others know you're coming.

At Alice Holt Forest we are lucky enough to have a fantastic onsite partner that offers Adaptive Cycling. We believe that cycling should be for everyone and for this reason we house a fleet of 20 fully adapted cycles exclusive for users with disabilities. These bikes accommodate all types of disabilities allowing the user to have an amazing experience on the bike.

Alice Holt Cycle Centre

At the Alice Holt Cycle Centre we truly believe cycling is a great way for people of all ages to have fun while keeping active. Through our dedicated team at the centre we are determined to get more people cycling. Cycling is often cited as one of the universal skills for life, along with reading and swimming.  We are passionate about helping others learn and enjoy this exciting new adventure.

Why learn with us

All of the training we provide occurs within the beautiful Alice Holt forest. This provides a safe, attractive, traffic-free location in which you can learn to ride.
All of our staff are trained, experienced instructors with enhanced DBS clearance and first aid training.
We recommend that all course participants bring their own bicycle and helmet but we have all the required equipment available to rent if that's not possible.
We provide honest individually tailored feedback to each participant to help them on the journey of learning to cycle.

Balanceability

The Alice Holt Cycle Centres Balanceability bike training is developed with Bikeability national standards whilst also incorporating our experience in delivering Balanceability at our other locations nationwide.

Balanceability combines unique ergonomic balance bikes with a schedule of fun activities that build confidence, spatial awareness and dynamic balance skills enabling young children to cycle without ever needing stabilisers. All of the equipment that is needed is provided but participants are welcome to bring their own balance bikes and helmets.

Bikeability

Bikeability is cycle proficiency for the twenty-first century. We have teamed up with the Forestry Commision in Alice Holt to deliver the highest quality Bikeability courses. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence no matter what kind of cycling they are looking to take part in.

Bikeability Level 1
At Level 1 new riders learn to control and master their bikes in a safe area away from cars and other traffic. Trainees will learn in groups of 3-12 participants. There are no set prerequisites however participants must be able to cycle a bicycle. If the participant has not learned to cycle yet then why not visit our cycling lessons page .

At the end of this session each participant will be able to complete the following.

Prepare yourself and your bike for cycling.
Get on and off your bike without help.
Start off, pedal and stop with control.
Pedal along, use gears and avoid objects.
Look all around and behind, and control the bike.
Share space with pedestrians and other cyclists.

All of our Bikeability Level 1 trained cyclists receive a badge and a certificate in recognition of what they have achieved. The certificate also includes areas for further practice noted by the instructor. We recommend that all course participants bring their own bicycle and helmet but we have all the required equipment available to rent if that's not possible.

Cycling lessons

Cycling is not only a great way to stay active but can open the door to hours of fun and enjoyment.  Our private 1-1 cycling lessons are tailored specifically to the needs of each student. Our experienced instructors who will guide you step by step, from getting on and off your bike, to making the bike go where you want, all while continuously working on your balance. These lessons are the quickest way to learn to a ride and enjoy the freedom of cycling. Each lesson is provided in our purpose built all ability cycling area. This provides a safe, relaxing and traffic free environment. We recommend that all students bring their own bicycle and helmet as it is best to learn on the bicycle you will ride when by yourself however we are happy to provide all of the required equipment if needed free of charge.

Cycling lessons for children

These lessons are designed to help children gain the confidence and skills required to ride a pedal bike independently, getting them off to the best start in cycling and assisting their ability to participate in Bikeability. A professional instructor can quickly assess what areas to focus on to achieve independant riding while avoiding the parent / child frustration that can sometimes creep in to these situations. At the end of each lesson the instructor will provide feedback and exercises to help each child build on the skills they have learnt during their lesson.

Cycling lessons adults

If you never learned to cycle, are returning to cycling after a long break or are simply looking to build your confidence then this is the course for you. Our experienced instructors will provide private 1-1 cycling lessons at your pace tailored specifically to teach you to cycle and increase your confidence. Everyone learns at different rates, and if it takes a while to learn then this isn’t a bad thing as practice makes perfect.
