Amazing bike trails at Hicks Lodge

The National Forest's Cycle Centre, Hick's Lodge offers a fantastic opportunity for natural cycling. Situated in young woodland, the site has been designed with the whole family in mind.

1. Young cyclists and family trails

Learn to ride your bike in the forest! Cycling in the forest is one of the safest and most relaxing ways to pick up confidence and develop cycling skills.

The Green graded Wood Farm Trail provides a great introduction to forest cycling, taking in a variety of habitats and views.

Starting near the long loop on the Family Forest Trail, follow the green arrows around this 2.75 mile route. The trail finishes on the Family Forest trail short loop.

2. Cross Country Mountain Biking

Ready for a challenge of fitness, technique and skill?

The Blue graded Shell Brook Trail offers a fantastic introduction to mountain biking. Taking riders around the whole site and through mixed woodlands, the slightly rough and uneven and includes jumps, bumps and berms.

3. Facilities, events, and things to look out for

  • Drop by the Hicks Lodge café for a post-ride coffee and food.
  • Shop and hire bikes from our excellent Cycle Centre . Hire rates are: 1 hour £8.00, 2 hours £12.00, 3 hours £16.00, Tag a longs & child Seats £5.00. You'll find this by the café.
  • Toilets are located adjacent to Hicks Lodge Café and include baby changing and accessible facilities. The toilets are opened and closed at the same time as the cafe.
Shell Brook Trail
  • Moderate
This exciting trail takes riders around the whole site through mixed woodlands and includes jumps, bumps and berms.
Wood Farm Trail
  • Easy
This off-road trail provides a great introduction to mountain biking, taking in a variety of habitats and views.
