The latest National Statistics on forestry produced by the Forestry Commission were released on 29 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Detailed statistics are published in the web publication Forestry Statistics 2011, with an extract in Forestry Facts & Figures 2011.  They include UK statistics on woodland area, planting, timber, trade, climate change, environment, recreation, employment and finance & prices and also some statistics on international forestry.  Where possible, figures are also provided for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The key points from the latest releases are:

  • the woodland area in the United Kingdom in 2011 is 3.1 million hectares: 1.3 million hectares (43%) are independently certified as sustainably managed;
  • 8 thousand hectares of new woodland were created in the UK in 2010-11;
  • 9.4 million green tonnes of UK softwood roundwood and 0.5 million green tonnes of UK hardwood roundwood were delivered to primary wood processors and others in 2010, representing a 13% increase overall in roundwood deliveries from the previous year;
  • wood products imported into the UK in 2010 were valued at £6.8 billion and comprised 10 million cubic metres of wood (sawnwood, other wood and woodbased panels) and 8 million tonnes of pulp and paper, representing an increase of 19% in wood imports and no change in pulp and paper imports from 2009;
  • UK forests helped to counter carbon dioxide emissions by removing over 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year;
  • in 2010, 52% of UK woodland was assessed as being accessible to the public;
  • the Forestry Commission's net expenditure on public forests totalled £63 million in 2010-11, and a further £113 million were spent by the Commission on other activities, including grants, administration and research;
  • industrial roundwood removals in North and Central America and Europe decreased by over 10% from 2008 to 2009, but still accounted for almost two thirds of global industrial roundwood removals.
