Playday in the forest!
Wednesday 1st August, 11am - 3pm

If you go down to the forest today...join in and play! We will have a range of activities for children and their families to enjoy around the forest including:

Be a forest prince or princess for a day and make your own forest crown to take home.

Have a go at making your own den in our shelter building area.

Help Butterfly Conservation with the Big Butterfly Count and join a 15 minute butterfly walk at 10am, 11am and 12pm.

Will you hit the target in our woodland archery?

Spend the day in the forest buy your lunch from Grounds Cafe or bring a picnic.

Children’s Cycling Activities with British Cycling.

Fun, free sessions to get your youngsters more confident and loving life on 2 wheels.

 1000 – 1200 Ready Set Ride. Learn to ride activities

Join the British cycling coaches for fun and easy ways to help children from as young as 18 months to eight years old learn to ride a bike.

 1300 - 1430 Guided Ride

It doesn’t matter what kind of bike you ride, how fast you go, or how old you are, anyone can join in.  Led by qualified British Cycling coaches, you will be taken on a fun ride exploring the beautiful scenery and  trails of Salcey Forest.

 1430 – 1600 For the Go-Ride Activities session –

HSBC UK Go-Ride is British Cycling's development programme for young people, a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and to improve their bike handling skills.

 Borrow a bike

If you haven’t got a bike or will struggle to transport your bike to Salcey Forest we have a limited number of balance bikes and bikes for you to borrow for your session.

To reserve a bike please contact providing your name (parent), child’s age and which session you would like to attend.

Nordic Walking*

Every Tuesday, 9am - 10am

Improve your health and wellbeing with a new activity; explore the Forest on a walk led by a British Nordic Walking instructor. For further information about costs and to book your place please visit 

Master those pedals

Every Wednesday, 10am - 3pm

Bring your balance bike or bicycle and learn to ride in our beginners' cycling area. The cycling area will be open every Wednesday until the end of August 2018. Suitable for children aged up to 8 years old.

Meet the moths

Wednesday 15th August, 10am - 12pm

Join Butterfly Conservation to learn about and have a go at identifying the moths which live in Salcey Forest. No booking or experience required.

Acorn Forest School Holiday Club

AcornForest School Holiday Club at Salcey Forest is run by qualified forest school leaders and offers a fun and engaging way for children aged 4-13 to explore the natural woodland environment, whilst supporting families with their childcare needs during school holidays.  

Activities Include:

Building dens, Natural Crafts, Mini-Beast Hunting and Nature Tracking,
Tool Use, Rope Swings and Rope Bridges, Scavenger Hunts, and lots more

Gruffalo Orienteering*

Available from July 2018

Have a go at our Gruffalo themed orienteering course suitable for children up to 8 years old. Orienteering is a fun navigational challenge and involves a healthy mix of physical activity and decision making. Kids will love the excitement of using a simple map to try and find twelve Gruffalo markers in the forest.

You can buy the Gruffalo orienteering map, £1.50 (card payments only), from Salcey Forest Centre Information point between 10am and 2pm daily. Details on how to contact the rangers out of these times will be posted at the information point.

Planning your own event in Salcey Forest

Running your own event

If you are thinking of holding any organised group event on Forestry Commission land you need to contact us in advance to ensure you have a safe and successful event.

A minimum of 8 weeks advance notice is required prior to your intended event date but the longer the better to ensure good planning and to accommodate changes.
