Forest mensuration systems

Summary of research
A research programme delivering methodologies for the assessment of proporties of woodland and trees. The research forms the basis for development of efficient, practical and reliable procedures for the measurement of trees, woodlands and timber, which are needed to support the regulation and monitoring of forest areas and their management. Reliable systems of measurement and models of growth and yield require underpinning data for analytical models and their calibration. Related data are required for validation of estimates and models, and for detailed quantification of accuracy and precision. The programme supports the acquisition of data obtained from permanent and temporary mensuration sample plots.

Scientific objectives are set across two key research areas relevant to current policy and practice priorities:

  1. Measurement systems development
  2. Sample plot data acquisition
