Families enjoying a picnic at Postern hill. Savernake forest. Forest of Dean

Postern Hill is a large site set amongst mature oak trees. There is ample parking and a large open grassy area with picnic tables and areas for 'bring your own' BBQ's.

Large round timber stumps have replaced the bbq's, please place your disposable bbq's on these to avoid burning benches, tables or grass.

What do other visitors say?

The campsite has changed very much and has gone down hill in my opinion. I also have 2 questions about the site

1. Is there a certain distance you have to be to the electrical posts??

2. Is there any area of the site that people paying for electrical pitch can not pitch up ??

The Forestry Commission do not run this campsite. It is managed by 'Camping in the forest'. You will be best to contact them with your feedback.

Forestry Commission Response

We visited the forest today, wanting to find the picnic area. We put in the postcode SN8 4ND as shown on this page, but it took us to Alton Barnes, miles away from the forest. We were unable to fine the picnic area, which was very disappointing.

We apologise that you were not able to find the picnic area. The post code that we have is SN8 4ND and this should get you close to the Postern Hill campsite and forest car park where you can gain access to the forest and picnic area. The picnic site is located on Postern Hill, Marlborough.

Hi, we went for a 6 mile lovely walk today but parking at postern hill was a problem as the barrier was down so no cars could access the car park. There were no signs explaining why. Is this a regular occurance please? We travelled from winchester and want to go again but we are worried about parking if friends come too.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your walk and apologise that you had trouble parking. In order to retain the private nature of the forest and prevent it being adopted as a public highway, we are obligated to close the forest to vehicles for one day a year. Now this is done the car park will be open as per usual. We hope you return and have a lovely visit with friends.
