Newtondale Forest is situated in one of the most spectacular valleys in Yorkshire created when meltwater from an ice age glacier gouged a deep gorge through the hills.
Originally planted as a 'typical' Forestry Commission wood much has been done in recent years to restore the rugged nature of this incredible landscape.
There is no vehicle access into Newtondale Forest. Parking is available across the Level Crossing at Levisham Station and then walk into the forest.
Newtondale Halt is a small 'railway halt' in the heart of Newtondale giving access to the forest and on the moorland. The spectacular scenery combined with the sight and sound of steam locomotives make this a place not to be missed.
Levisham Station is owned by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The forest can be entered on foot from here or a train taken to Newtondale Halt.

I remember visiting regularly as a boy, and the Newtondale Forest Drive was a lovely day out. My Dad used to let me drive his van (naught I know) along the forest drive if it wasn't too busy. Is it still possible to cycle and/or walk along all of the forest roads, such as Browne Howe Road, and Heads Road? How about all the Cropton roads? I have very fond memories of following the RAC Rally in the 80's too. Would be great to get access again, even if only on foot.

Tried to find Newtondale Forest Drive yesterday. Gave up after a few hours & now read it is closed. Why? And why is it still being published on all up to date maps. We were not the only people looking for it. Very disappointed this is closed. We have loads of walking opportunities & very few forest drives. Please open this again and sort the map issue! Thanks such a shame!

I have travelled by car (slowly) from Levisham via the forest 3 times in my life, only seen one other vehicle (a post van in these visits) Sadly this is now closed for vehicles, i cannot except that traffic is heavy through this drive as i have never seen it that way. It would be good to walk through but sadly i, and thousands of other people are disabled and cannot walk through, so it looks like this another nice day out closed to disabled people.
