Wakerley Great Wood is a historic ancient   woodland. The car park is set amongst majestic larch and includes a large grassed area for games and picnicing. For walkers there are numerous informal trails and paths along the forest roads and tracks, some surfaced, some not. There is also the Scar Tree Trail cycle route, for cyclists only. The woodland contains rich and diverse archaeological remains. The oldest features are two extremely rare Bronze Age cairns.

Can you ride horses through these woods?

Kfount, 1/Jan/2018

You can ride horses on the hard roads throughout the wood, and also use the horse trail - but please note that this is currently closed after the storm last week, which has resulted in dangerous trees on the trail, which will take a while to clear up.

Forestry Commission Response

At Wakerley this morning I saw a white deer. Please tell me other people have seen this. My family think Im making it up/going mad.

Lindsey Bennett, 21/Nov/2017

Yes, there are white fallow deer which run with the herd which can be seen from time to time, in any of our woodlands. White fallow deer are relatively common.

Can you hire bikes

Anonymous, 18/Feb/2017

There is no bike hire at Wakerley. You can sometimes hire bikes from Fineshade Wood, nearby, but you need to check the opening times of the Fineshade Cycling shop.
