Trail description

Family at the Desert Rats information panel at High Ash in Thetford forest. East Anglia FD

The Cromwell tank at the entrance to the forest is a memorial to the 7th Armoured Division, known as the Desert Rats, who were based here during World War II.

The easy access trail passes through the old camp. Interpretation boards explain aspects of life for the Desert Rats during their stay in Thetford Forest during 1944.

What do other visitors say?

There does not appear to be any maps of the walks available to download

Nigel Rieger-Ridd, 27/Sep/2017

The walk is clearly way marked.

Forestry Commission Response

Hi...confused ...! There is a board at the Barton Mills picnic site which seems to claim this part as High Ash and includes a map and a suggested walk.....High Ash is of course further out towards Swaffham...the woodland site with the tank at the entrance...this seems to have the correct board and walk details... Also...there is a quotation from 7th Army (leader?) Lawson recalling how awul dull and miserable the camp was as nissen huts under dark trees....However...He then says....we discovered the place was called Brandon...............which High Ash clearly isn't..? There was a sort of camp in B Randon where the |Forest Centre is now....?? I am confused and think maybe someone at the Commission is too ?? :-)
