Afforestation Thresholds

The table below describes the range of location types and area thresholds that apply to afforestation under EIA regulations.

The land, or part of the land, is in a sensitive area which is a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but no other sensitivity  2 hectares or less No EIA required
The land, or part of the land, is in a sensitive area which is a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but no other sensitivity. More than 2 hectares Application for EIA opinion required
The land, or part of the land, is in a sensitive area, but which is not a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Area of any size  Application for EIA opinion required 
No part of the land is in a sensitive area  2 hectares or less  No EIA required 
No part of the land is in a sensitive area  More than 2, but no more than 5 hectares  Prior Basic Notification required 
No part of the land is in a sensitive area (non-sensitive) and the area is outside of the Low Risk area.   More than 5 hectares  Application for EIA opinion required 
No part of the land is in a sensitive area and the area is fully within a Low Risk area  More than 5, but no more than 50 hectares  Prior Full Notification required 
No part of the land is in a sensitive area, and the area is within a Low Risk area  More than 50 hectares  Application for EIA opinion required
