Cycling in Leigh Woods

Whether you've just bought your first bike, or you're happy shredding over roots, Leigh Woods offers a fantastic opportunity for natural cycling. Situated just outside of Bristol, ride here for spectacular views over the Avon gorge.

1. Young cyclists and family trails

Learn to ride your bike in the forest! Cycling in the forest is one of the safest and most relaxing ways to pick up confidence and develop cycling skills.

  • The Purple Trail (Green equivilent) is a great all-ability trail for walkers and beginner cyclists. At 1.5 miles long n this trail you will pass through ancient woodland and go through the parish wall into the remnants of wood pasture.
  • The Blue graded Yer Tiz is used by experienced riders and families alike. It’s a lovely trail for those wanting to improve their skills.

Hoping to Inspire, excite and develop mountain biking, Pedal Progression (external) have a purpose built coaching area within Leigh woods. From here, they are able to design the perfect session for you, your group or family. Their expert coaches have years of experience in teaching a range of skills for all ages and abilities.

2. Cross Country & Downhill Mountain Biking

  • Try the optional Red grade Gert Lush Trail sections of Yer Tiz if you're feeling bold. Narrow and technical, it is suitable for more experienced off-road cyclists. A playful and challenging taster of a Red grade trail.
  • The Blue and Red graded Nova and Super Nova trails (external) at Ashton Court can also be reached via the Yer Tiz trail from North Road (National Trust entrance)

3. Facilities, events, and things to look out for

  • Print a Leigh Woods leaflet before you go, or the National Trust trails map
  • You can hire mountain bikes from Pedal Progression (external), located around the back of the Ashton Court Golf Course Cafe. Make sure to call in advance to book your bike hire: 0117 973 1298.
  • Grab a coffee from Leigh Woods Coffee Co. On site every weekend and during school holidays, they serve a range of delicious hot drinks and snacks. For more details visit their facebook page.
