Highway Rat Trail

For 2018 try our Highway Rat trail, based on the popular children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Join the Highway Rat on his forest adventure.  Follow the trail to complete fun activities and spot characters along the way.

Buy an activity pack for £3 from the Visitor Information Office and pretend to be a highway bandit!

Nine Cone Treasure Hunt Activity

Available throughout the summer holidays

The Pinetum is home to one of the world’s greatest collection of conifers, so it is a fantastic place for a ‘Cone Treasure Hunt’!

There are nine beautiful trees with cones for you to find along the trail.  You’ll soon see for yourself how unique and varied the cones are!

No need to book, just drop-in to the Visitor Centre.

Activity sheets will be available to purchase from the learning team between 10.30am and 3pm, on Thursdays and Fridays, throughout August.  Alternatively they can be purchased from the Visitor Information Office throughout the summer school holidays, during office opening hours.

Cost £1 per child.  Children should be accompanied by an adult.  Bedgebury vehicle admission fees apply.

Hands on Cones Activity

On Thursdays & Fridays weeks commencing 30th July - 20th August inclusive

Did you know that most species of coniferous tree has its own unique cone?

Enjoy interactive cone handling with the Bedgebury learning team to find out more about small cones, giant cones and everything in between!

No need to book, just drop-in to the Visitor Centre between 10.30am and 3pm.

Earth Photo Exhibition at Bedgebury 

27 July - 1 October

The inaugural Earth Photo exhibition presents a shortlist of exceptional photographs and films that document the earth in all its diversity at the Royal Geographical Society in London. Earth Photo aims to enable a better understanding of the world around us, focussing on four key themes - People, Nature, Place and Change. The competition has been developed jointly by Forestry Commission England and the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), and supported by Cox & Kings and Stanfords. The shortlist includes photographs captured at Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest.

See a selection of the shortlisted images amongst the trees at Bedgebury from 27 July - 1 October (inclusive). There is no charge for the exhibition, normal vehicle admission fees apply.

The Hunting of the Snark

Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th October 2018 at 7:30pm

Take an unforgettable journey through Bedgebury National Pinetum and join The Butcher, The Banker, The Broker, The Barrister and The Bonnet Maker as they hunt the ever elusive Snark. Characters from Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem, The Hunting of the Snark, are brought to life by outdoor theatre company, Burn the Curtain, in this truly spectacular promenade performance. 

Come prepared for action and adventure, and with your much needed help, we will make a fresh attempt to find the mythical Snark.

Please arrive between 7-7.15pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. Park in the Visitor Centre car park, vehicle admission fees are included in ticket price.

The performance includes a walk of 1.5 - 2 miles, with some uneven ground, and is therefore not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Please wear suitable footwear/clothing for the weather conditions and all terrains. Suitable for ages 6+.

Downloadable Trail at Bedgebury: SnarkHunter

Alongside Burn The Curtain’s promenade theatre show, you can download the Snarkhunter app for free to follow Lewis Carroll’s original story on a trail through Bedgebury and play games along the way.

We recommended downloading the app before arrival at Bedgebury. The trail will take 1 - 1.5 hours to complete. To use the app your phone will require a camera, GPS, magnetometer and gyroscope.

All events are held in, or will start from, the Visitor Centre unless otherwise specified.  Full payment is required to reserve places on all events.  No refund can be offered for failure to attend any course or event.  If excessively adverse weather is forecast, a cancellation email will be sent three days before the event.  If you are unable to attend on the proposed alternative date, you will be offered a full refund.  Dogs are not permitted at any of the events listed.  Events involving a walk may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.  Non-members will be subject to a daily vehicle admission charge unless otherwise specified.
