Highway Rat Trail

For 2018 try our Highway Rat trail, based on the popular children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Join the Highway Rat on his forest adventure.  Follow the trail to complete fun activities and spot characters along the way.

Buy an activity pack for £3 from the Visitor Information Office and pretend to be a highway bandit!

The Adventures of Dr Dolittle

Saturday 7th July

Illyria’s outdoor theatre performance of ‘The Adventures of Dr Dolittle’, by Hugh Lofting.

Dr John Dolittle starts out as a human doctor but once he is taught by his wise old parrot Polynesia how to talk to animals he becomes the most celebrated veterinary doctor in England!  Soon word of his skills spreads and animals across the world send messages asking for his help, so he buys a leaky old ship and together with his trusty pet crew sets forth on a mission to heal illness, right wrongs and gain a greater understanding of the animal kingdom.

Join Jip the dog, Chee-Chee the monkey, Dab-Dab the duck and permanently hungry Gub-Gub the pig on this funny, much loved and exciting adventure!

Suitable for cheeky monkeys aged 5+.  The performance will take place in Bedgebury’s Walled Garden and will last approx. 1hr 40mins, including a 20min interval.

Walled Garden gates open for parking from 1pm and the arena will open approx. 1.30pm.  The performance starts at 2.30pm.

This is a non-seated event so please bring rugs or small fold-up chairs.  Picnics welcome and please dress appropriately for the forecast weather conditions.  Dogs and umbrellas are not permitted.

Tickets cost £15 for adults and £10 for children (2 – 15yrs inclusive).

Bedgebury National Pinetum Habitat Trail & Spring Photo Snapshot Activity

Monday 9th – Friday 13th April

Bedgebury National Pinetum is a fantastic place for wildlife to live!

Follow our habitat trail which guides you through the Pinetum to discover some of the fascinating wildlife living here and test your skills as a top class wildlife spotter!

No need to book, just drop-in to the Visitor Centre between 10am and 2pm.

 Cost £2 per child.  Children should be accompanied by an adult.  Bedgebury vehicle admission fees apply.

Whilst enjoying your visit to the Pinetum, why not capture the theme of ‘Bedgebury in Spring’ in a smartphone photo?  We would love to see your favourite images so upload them to Twitter using the hashtag #BedgeburyInSpring.

Dawn Photography (Postponed from Nov 2017)

Saturday 21st April

An exclusive opportunity to join award-winning photographer, David Jenner, as he leads a small group into the Pinetum to take photographs during the ‘golden hour’ of the morning.  David will share his knowledge and give advice on how to take great pictures in challenging light.

The walk will be followed by a post-production classroom session where David will demonstrate how you can make your images even more spectacular using Adobe Lightroom.

Participants should bring their own DSLR, or similar full function bridge camera, and a tripod.  Hot drinks and breakfast pastries included.

Limited numbers - don’t miss this chance to see the Pinetum at its glorious best!

The event will start from the Visitor Centre at 5.30am and finish approximately 11am.

Smartphone Photography

Friday 27th April

Almost everyone these days has a smartphone, but how many of us know how to use our phone cameras to get stunning photographs? Professional photographer, Lisa Hills, will lead a photographic walk round the Pinetum to show you how to take superb photos using your phone.

Pushchairs and toddlers are especially welcome on this course to ensure you have your own personal child models to practise on!

The workshop will start at the Visitor Centre at 10am and will last approximately 2 hours.

Dawn Chorus Walk

Sunday 29th April

Join local wildlife guide and bird expert, Simon Ginnaw, as he leads a small group around the Pinetum at sunrise.  Simon, whose expertise is bird identification and behavioural ecology, will unravel the complexity of the Pinetum’s bird song and, hopefully, find a star bird or two, such as the beautiful firecrest.

The walk will start from the Visitor Centre at 5am and will last approximately 3 hours.

Nice Work 10k & 5k Summer Series Race 1

Wednesday 2nd May

2018 sees Nice Work return with this great summer series using the undulating paths and trails of Bedgebury Pinetum & Forest.

The event is open to runners of all abilities with a choice of either a 10k or 5k route; 5k runners completing one lap and 10k runners completing two.

Medals and finish line goodies will be on offer to all finishers and series prizes awarded to the leading male and female with points gained for race positions across the summer series.

The race will start at 7pm with parking in the main Visitor Centre car park.

Have you got a digital SLR camera but no clue about how to move away from the ‘Auto’ setting?  Do you want to learn how to use the features of your camera and get fabulous results?  Professional photographer, Lisa Hills, will combine practical camera and photography knowhow to show you how to take great photos.

Lisa will give you tips on composition and lighting and help you understand the role of shutter speed and aperture so that you can be a more confident photographer.  The session will include the following:

How to take sharp photos of objects with a blurred background; how to capture action; landscape photography; reviewing & critique of images.

The workshop will start from the Visitor Centre at 10am and will last approximately 2 hours.

Introduction to Birdsong

Fascinated by birds?  Want to learn more about bird behaviour and birdsong?  This workshop is an introduction to birdsong and bird identification through their song, run by local nature guide and bird behaviour specialist, Simon Ginnaw.

Over the course of the morning Simon will unravel the complexities of bird song to help you begin to identify the different species as you walk through the Pinetum.  This workshop is perfect for complete novices wanting to learn more about birds and their behaviour.

Nice Work 10k & 5k Canicross Challenge

Sunday 20th May

Join Nice Work for the return of this sell out event for the South East Canicross Calendar.

Following the picturesque paths and trails of Bedgebury Pinetum & Forest, this event is open to Canicross runners of all abilities from novices to experienced athletes.  Runners can choose the 10k or 5k race route and there will be medals and dog treats on offer to all finishers plus prizes awarded in both races for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female.

The race is organised in partnership with Fit Together Canicross who will be on hand throughout the event to help with any Canicross related questions or advice as well as having Canicross kit for sale on the day.

The race will start at 10am with parking and race registration in Bedgebury Walled Garden.

Buggy Running

Sunday 20th May

Buggy Running is a great way to enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise without the need of costly childcare!  Not only is it fun and sociable, it’s the perfect opportunity to burn off those calories through a safe and effective workout, relieve stress and boost your mood!  Choose to walk, jog or run with your little one as you follow a 5k off-road trail.

Meet adjacent to the Go Ape cabin to start, sessions will run from approx. 9am to 11am.  Entries can be made online at www.buggyrunningevents.co.uk.

Entry fee costs £12.50 and includes timing chip, medals, certificate and sticker set.

Nightjar Walk

Wednesday 30th May

Bedgebury forest is home to many special birds but the enchanting nightjar is considered to be one of the best.  We hope to share with you the mesmerising ‘churring’ of this bird and perhaps a wing-clap or two on this walk with ecologist and bird specialist, Simon Ginnaw.  We may also see ‘roding’ woodcock or hear tawny owls.

The walk will start from the Visitor Centre at 8.45pm and will last approximately 2 hours.

Pinetum Bat Walk

Thursday 31st May

Incredibly, Bedgebury is home to six different bat species and warm summer evenings are the best time to see them.  Armed with bat detectors, our bat specialists will lead bat walks in the Pinetum as the sun goes down.  This is the perfect opportunity to see and learn more about these intriguing creatures.

This walk will be led by Simon Ginnaw, starting from the Visitor Centre at sunset (approx. 9pm, time tbc nearer the date) and will last approximately 2 hours.

This walk is not suitable for young children or for anyone with limited mobility.

Forest Live Concert – Paloma Faith (Sold Out)

Friday 15th June

With her acclaimed Number 1 album ‘The Architect’ riding high in the charts and a BRIT nomination for Best British Female, Paloma Faith announces ‘The Architect Summer Tour’ which includes dates as part of Forest Live, the concert series organised by the Forestry Commission.

So far ‘The Architect’ has spent 8 weeks in the top ten, propelled by the poptastic single ‘Crybaby’, the stunning ‘Guilty’ and latest ‘Til I’m Done’.  The new album is currently on course to become her fourth double platinum album in a row – which would make her the first British woman in chart history to achieve this incredible feat! 

Equally at home both onstage and in the studio, these shows will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the summer season.

Forest Live is a major live music series, managed by the Forestry Commission. Held every year in seven beautiful forest locations across the country, over 1.5 million people have attended a gig in the programme’s seventeen-year history. Forest Live Concert – Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott with special guest Billy Bragg have announced dates as part of Forest Live, the summer concert series organised by the Forestry Commission.

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott’s latest album ‘Crooked Calypso’ charted at no 2 making it their highest release as a duo to date following on from two further top 5 albums in ‘What Have We Become’ (’14) and ‘Wisdom, Laughter and Lines’ (’15).

Paul Heaton, one of the UK’s most successful songwriters with some 10 million album sales under his belt, first came to public attention in the early 80s as front man of Hull-based indie poppers The Housemartins best known for their third single ‘Happy Hour’ and their No 1 acapella Isley Bros cover ‘Caravan of Love’.  In ’88 Heaton formed The Beautiful South, who released 10 hugely successful albums. Jacqui Abbott was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from ’94 to 2000 and she sang many of their signature hits including ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘Dream A Little Dream’.  The Forest Live gigs will see them play material from their albums as a duo and songs from The Beautiful South and the Housemartins.

BFCC Event Cycle 6 Hour Endurance Race

Saturday 23rd June

6 hour endurance race using the tracks in the club’s training area.  Participants can enter solo, as a pair or in teams of 3 or 4 and race against the clock to record the total number of laps completed within the 6 hour period.  Timing chips will be used to record individual lap times and a trophy presentation will follow.

Race starts at 10.30am – tbc.  Further details will be available to view at www.boarsonbikes.co.uk .

Bedgebury’s Butterflies

Saturday 30th June

Do you want to be able to tell your gatekeeper from your meadow brown?

Join butterfly specialist, Anna Picken, at one of two events this summer at Bedgebury to learn about the resident and migrant butterflies that can be found in the Pinetum.  As you walk around the Pinetum you will learn about the habitats of butterflies and how to identify the different species.

This event will start at 12.30pm with a presentation about butterflies at the Visitor Centre and will be followed by the walk.  This event will last approximately 2.5 hours.

£12 per adult & £4 per child (under 16) for the talk and walk         or

£10 per adult & £4 per child (under 16) for just the talk.  Call 01580 879842 to book.
