Cycling and MTB in Birches Valley Cannock Chase

Whether you've just bought your first bike, or you're happy shredding through rock gardens, Birches Valley offers a fantastic opportunity for natural cycling. Known as the midlands premier destination for mountainbiking, the forest also offers a lot for developing cyclists.

1. Young cyclists and family trails

Learn to ride your bike in the forest! Cycling in the forest is one of the safest and most relaxing ways to pick up confidence and develop cycling skills.

The Green graded Fairoak Trail is an easy circular trail that takes you through the magnificent Fairoak Valley and Pools, a rich and important habitat that is home to many wildlife species.

The Blue Sherbrook Trail takes in the picturesque Sherbrook Valley with its mixture of woodlands and open heathland. It has two loops to choose from of differing lengths so you can expand your cycle route as your confidence grows.

2. Cross Country & Downhill Mountain Biking

Ready for a challenge of fitness, technique and skill? Craving your next adrenaline fix? Our premier mountain bike routes will spoil you for choice.

  • The Red Monkey Trail is a singletrack mountain bike trail with technical trail features and several black options, guaranteed to leave you grinning ear to ear.
  • Our other Red trail Follow the Dog is Cannock Chase’s original and much loved mountain bike trail. The technical singletrack is being regularly updated, so keep coming back.
  • The challenging Stile Cop Bike Park boasts several extreme/bike park graded downhill trails. Expect large, unavoidable technical trail features which require some serious commitment!

A volunteer trail group, Chase Trails (external), meet regularly to help build and maintain the trail network.

3. Facilities, events, and things to look out for

  • Print a map before you go - available to download here. For a map of Stile Cop, click here. Maps are also available from bike shop, Go Ape, and the café.
