West Woods is a very beautiful plantation of beech trees on a former ancient woodland site. A long and gradual process is under way to increase the biodiversity of the woodland by introducing native species other than just beech, through the promotion of natural regeneration and planting.

The woodland becomes very popular in late spring due to the fantastic displays of bluebells which carpet the forest floor in certain areas. There is a good network of trails including an easy access route.

First time visit today with our young, enthusiastic Irish Setter. We walked for 1.5 hours and saw one other person walking a dog, very briefly, otherwise we felt we had the place to ourselves. What a magical place, even before the bluebells are out! Not a sound except birdsong and the wind in the trees, the crunch of beech leaves underfoot and the occasional cock pheasant honking! We will be back :). Beautiful.

Can you please tell me if the pathways through the bluebells are suitable for a disability scooter. Thanking you . Jean

The hard-surfaced track around the woodland is suitable for a scooter and there is an all ability waymarked trail which is also suitable. I am afraid some of the smaller paths through the woods would not be accessible. There will still be lots of Bluebells visible from the main tracks.

Forestry Commission Response

Can you please confirm the routes that a horse and rider can take, is there a map?

Horse riders are welcome to ride on the hard surfaced paths around west woods as well as any of the marked and signed bridleways. There is no map on site but there are signs and you can also use an OS map to locate these paths. Thank you
