Feel good this autumn with activity sheets, forest trails and our mindfulness guide.

The old Forest of Savernake is derived from ancient wood pasture management, and has many veteran trees.  The forest extends to 1100 hectares (2750 acres) most of which is classified as a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being registered as an important historic park.

One of the oldest trees is the Big Bellied Oak which is very noticeable on the side of the A346 road, south of Cadley.  There are many other old and named trees in Savernake, a guide is available to purchase from the Postern Hill Campsite.

Since 1939 the majority of the woodland has been managed by the Forestry Commission with the freehold retained by the Savernake Estate.

What do other visitors say?

Is it allowed/leagal for people to make their own structors out of dead wood and sleep over night, as my Dad and I would like to go in a woodland and make a structor out of dead wood and make a controlled fire and stay over night.

Levi Monk, 29/Oct/2017

I am afraid that camping is not permitted in Savernake forest other than at the designated camping site at Postern Hill. Fires are also not permitted in the forest.

Levi Monk, 29/Oct/2017

I am afraid that camping is not permitted in the forest.

Forestry Commission Response

Is it permitted to collect up leaf litter from the paths, sides of roads etc. to take away to make leafmould?

Julia, 25/Oct/2017

I am afraid that taking anything from a SSSI (site of special scientific interest) is not permitted. Leaf litter is important because it is part of the nutrient recycling process that maintains healthy soils and it provides protection for seeds (acorns etc) from birds and gives them more chance of growing into young trees.
