Heathland and mature pines at Two Mile Bottom in Thetford forest. East Anglia FDThetford Forest is the UK's largest man made lowland forest with 18,730 hectares to explore.  It's patchwork of pines, heathland and broadleaves provide the ideal setting for a great day out, and a welcome refuge for a rich variety of animal and plant life.

The forest covers a huge area with many different places to visit offering a range attractions from the exciting outdoor play facilities at High Lodge, the history and heritage of Mildenhall Warren and Lynford Arboretum and the peace and tranquility of the walks around St Helen's.  Select Places to Visit in Thetford Forest from the side menu to find out more.

Hi. I am just wondering why all our woods and forests are in grids with wide tracks through them?

Is it so stupid people dont get lost?

Stuart, 16/Jan/2018

You are almost right. It does help forestry workers and members of the public not get lost as some forest rides have numbers and the blocks of trees have compartment numbers. It also helps us keep a record of what trees have been planted, how old they are and when they need to be harvested. Thetford Forest is only around 90 years old as it was planted as a timber resource for the country. When the first trees were planted, using a grid system (or compartments) it helped plan the lay out of the forest and allow access to the new trees along the rides to care for them. Often the old fields that were there before the forest were used to shape the compartments and if you can find a really old Ordnance Survey map from before the forest was planted, you might be able to spot the old field shapes in the layout of the forest. A natural forest would not have compartments or forest rides.

Last Sunday we had a marvellous day in Thetford Forest.

After this day we were wondering with my wife that is there an opportunity to plant tree in your forest? We'd like to plant 2 trees with our kids and we do not know is it possible or not? Can you please reply me?

Thank you. Have a lovely day.
