Westonbirt BioBlitz

Westonbirt BioBlitz

There's something lurking out in the Downs..... join us on Saturday 8 July to discover what it is.....

To celebrate the Downs Restoration Project we're holding a BioBlitz of the Downs to discover what plants and animals live and thrive in the arboretum. Join us and wildlife experts on 8 July as we hunt for remarkable species

Visit us on Saturday 8th July as we survey the Downs, collecting data on the amazing animals, plants and insects that make their homes in the grass. You'll be able to join in the hunt yourself and report your findings to BioBlitz HQ in the Great Oak Hall, and listen to the experts on their themed guided walks and talks on bees, butterflies, earthworms, birds, wildflowers and much more!

See the full programme of guided walks & talks

Whether you're an animal lover, a flora and fauna fanatic, or fan of all things creepy and crawly, there's a guided walk for you at the Westonbirt BioBlitz!

All walks are led by our team of visiting wildlife experts.

* Please note that unless otherwise specified, dogs are not permitted on the guided walks.*

Meet the experts

We've an exciting group of wildlife and plantlife experts joining us at the Westonbirt BioBlitz, to help us discover the species that live and thrive in the grassy Downs of the arboretum. Find out more

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is an intensive, quick way of finding out and recording all the plants, insects and animal species in a particular area - in this case the Downs of Westonbirt Arboretum.

We'll be gathering data on the species that live there, and this will help us to understand how the restoration of the Downs project is going, and how different species we find all fit into the wider environment and landscape of the arboretum. The records we find will go to the Gloucestershire Centre for Environmental Records, and this will feed into the national record database.

What will you be able to do?

You'll be able to join in the hunt for exciting plants and creatures yourself & report your findings to the BioBlitz HQ in the Old Arboretum. You'll also be able to attend exciting guided walks, demonstrations and talks from visiting wildlife experts throughout the day.

A Tree Spotter's Guide Book launch

Dan Crowley, Westonbirt's Dendrologist, will also be there giving guided walks on some of the highlights of his new book 'Westonbirt Arboretum's Tree Spotter's Guide' and signing copies

Dogs are welcome at the event, but please note that they should be kept on leads at all times while on the Downs and are not allowed in the Old Arboretum.
