Creation of woodland to mitigate climate change

Planting trees is recognised as an important method to lock up CO2 and help mitigate against climate change. All trees make a contribution but faster growing trees lock up carbon more quickly than slower trees. Yield class is a measure of growth and can be anticipated by the use of the Ecological Site Classification (ESC) decision support tool developed by Forest Research. It is expected that applicants will have either used good local knowledge or ESC and also considered the longer term resilience of the planting to climate change.

 The locking up of carbon can also be a way of attracting additional investment to a planting scheme.

It is expected that with a changing climate that summer heat issues could have a damaging impact on life within our rivers. Tree planting for creating dappled shade, cooling the air and water, is an ambition which has been targeted to priority areas within the Land Information Search.

Landscape Scale and Partnerships

Landscape scale projects over multiple ownerships supporting water or biodiversity or is within a defined project area and is contributing to that project’s objectives will be scored favourably. Please discuss with your Woodland Officer.
