Wildlife at Talybont

Powys
Wales
Talybont-on-Usk is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: SO 056 178
OSPREY WITH FISHTalybont forest lies along the side of Glyn Collwn and the Talybont Reservoir. At the head of the forest are the waterfalls of Blaen-y-glyn. At the end of the 19th century the valley contained at least ten farms. Small fields with stone walls surrounded each farmstead, and the nearby woodland provided timber for building and wood for fuel. During the 19th century limestone was quarried and transported along the Bryn Oer tramway and Brecon Merthyr railway to the mountains of South Wales. The old course of the railway is now part of the Taff trail and a footpath runs along the tramway.

Mammals: Talybont is home to badgers, otters, polecats, hares, foxes and a number of bat species. We have information about Badger and Otter

Birds: There is a bird hide overlooking the reservoir which is easily accessible from the main road (SO 098178).
You will be able to see waders and wildfowl and sometimes visiting ospreys in the winter.
Raptors such as Sparrowhawks, Peregrine, Goshawk, Buzzards, Merlins, Kestrels and Hobbies can be seen all year round.
If you stand on the forest edges and look up at the mountain you may be able to see Ringed Ouzel. We have information about Nightjar and Osprey

Habitats: The transition from moorland through to forest through to open water provides excellent habitats for a diversity of species. Many of these can be seen by walking through the forests or the uplands.
