 This woodland lies in the deep, secluded West Looe valley and provides a peaceful haven for a variety of wildlife. The good tracks that wind their way through the wood will provide you with ample opportunity to catch glimpses of some of this wildlife. During the autumn this wood is one of the best places in the county to experience the changing colours, especially amongst the beech plantations and oak woods.
Mammals: You will have the greatest chance of seeing badgers if you visit at dusk or in the early morning. Otter frequent the West Looe River which runs through the valley but are shy, as is the Roe deer. We have information about Roe deer, Badger and Otter
Birds: Deerpark Forest holds a huge raven roost. An evening walk provides you with a wonderful experience as hundreds of ravens come in to the forest. Buzzards are a common sight as they soar on the thermals and you may see the dramatic 'talon-grappling' display. You might also be lucky enough to spot a peregrine here during autumn and winter.
Insects and reptiles: This is one of the few sites in Britain where the marveille du jour moth still exists and since it relies on oak trees the valley is managed sympathetically. You may come across another rare and interesting creature in this forest : the blue ground beetle which is Britain's biggest and bluest ground beetle. It is nocturnal, feeds on slugs and is extremely rare, so tread with care! How to get there:
From the B3359 East Taphouse to Looe road turn off at the junction signposted to Herodsfoot.

What to see now Vernal flowers such as the bluebell, wood anemone, wild daffodil and violets provide amazing displays of colour throughout spring and early summer.
