Wildlife at Llangwyfan Woods Clwyd
Denbighshire
Wales
Llangwyfan is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: SJ138667
This small woodland rises very steeply from the stream at its base up on to the summit slopes of the Clwydian Hill near Penycloddiau. Recent felling and replanting has revealed long views across the Vale of Clwyd towards Denbigh.
Mammals: Llangwyfan has a variety of tree species, which includes Douglas fir, and broadleaves such as oak, ash, larch and birch which create a habitat for different types of wildlife. Badgers, foxes, moles and other mammals all live within the woods. To create different habitats for small mammals and insects you will notice a large amount of deadwood (branches, bark and small tree trunks) lying on the ground, which has been left for the purpose of encouraging these small animals and lichen and mosses. We have information about Badger
Birds: The woodland is home to all three British Woodpeckers, of which the most colourful is the Green Woodpecker. This is the largest species of woodpecker in the UK, growing to around 32 cms. The Green Woodpecker has an incredibly long tongue, which is around four times longer than its beak. This allows it to lick up insects hidden behind the bark of trees. It has beautiful green plumage on its back and wings, and a bright yellow rump. The head features a bright red crown, and there are black patches around the eyes. Along the upper forest roads in the open heath, Winchats and Stonechats are regulary seen amongst the Meadow Pipits.
How to get there: From the A525 Denbigh south roundabout, follow the minor road sign posted to Llanddyrnog. Go straight on at the next roundabout across the B5429, turn left at the next junction, follow this road to the top of the hill.
