OS Grid Reference: SO306625
Nash Wood is an Ancient Woodland which is owned and managed by the Forestry Commission. Although Nash Wood has been subject to replanting in some areas in recent years, the wood still retains many of the old veteran trees.
Mammals: The shrub and denser areas of the woodland support a small population of Dormice, which feed on the fruit, pollen and sometimes insects. Dormice are small, secretive and nocturnal and so are unlikely to be visible during the daytime. They form their nests out of honeysuckle bark which they weave into a ball. We have information about Roe deer and Badger
Birds: This wooded area is a popular host to many species of woodland bird life, thrushes, robins and tits. In the skies soaring over the area, you can view goshawks, kestrels and a recent visitor in the area is the red kite. During the spring evenings roving woodcock can be seen patrolling their territory and sometimes encounter their rivals which lead to squabbling chases. The blackbird is also very common in both rural and urban areas. The male has a shiny black plumage and grows to 25 cms, it has a distinctive yellow eye and yellow beak. The female of the species is not as attractive it is brown. They feed on many insects, worms and seeds. We have information about Red kite
Insects and reptiles: Among the important species found in the woodland is the Slave Maker Ant, which enslaves other meadow ants into working for the colony. A rare butterfly to Wales called the Wood White, has also been recorded in the woodland. We have information about Silver-washed fritillary Habitats: Nash Wood consists of a great deal of small scale diversity amongst the tree species with pervasive corridors of ancient oak, large areas of beech, and small coupes of larch, fir, cypress, cedar and pine planted over a broad timescale.
How to get there: From Knighton follow the B4355 to Kington. Approaching Presteigne at the T junction turn left onto the town bypass. Turn right opposite the High School and then bear right at the Forestry Commission parking sign and follow the road through to the car park.

What's of interest
Roe deer inhabit the woodland and can be seen during dusk or dawn browsing amongst the open areas of the woodland.
What to see now The Wood White is a delicate, slow-flying butterfly usually encountered in sheltered situations, such as woodland rides or scrub edges. Fine weather sees the male butterfly flying in search of a mate whereas the female of the species is more interested in eating and resting.
Did you know An adult dormouse during the summer months weighs between 17 and 20 grams which is about the same weight as two £1 coins.
