GREEN WOODPECKERThe Countryside Centre is the focal point for information about Afan Forest Park, its woodlands, wildlife, landscape and history. Since 1976 it has housed the South Wales Miners Museum which portrays a warm and fascinating social history of the Valley's Mining Community.
There is a charge for the Car Park all week during the Summer Holidays and at weekends from April to October. £1 short stay. £1.50 long stay, £6.50 season ticket.

Mammals: You may be lucky enough to glimpse some fallow deer that browse amongst the higher conifer plantations. At night Bats flutter through the valley. We have information about Fallow deer

Birds: Ancient oakwoods along the riverside provide for a wide variety of birds, Redstarts and Blackcaps amongst them. Nightjar have been heard "churring" in the young plantations. Dippers frequent the River Afan and Woodpeckers are a common site and form the Park's logo. We have information about Nightjar

Insects and reptiles: Adders can occasionally be found basking in the sunshine around the fields in the valley bottom and various butterflies frequent the warmer spots. We have information about Adder

How to get there:
Situated on the A4107 - follow the road from the M4, Junction 40 for about 6 miles. Look out for the signs for Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre.

Please note that Afan Forest Park permits are on hold at the present time until we establish designated horse routes.

Basic camping facilities available at a cost of £1.50 per person per night. Book in advance at the Countryside Centre.
