Black grouse are the key species in this area and the woodlands are managed accordingly. You might spot grouse on the forest fringes where the moor meets the trees although with much restructuring of the woodlands we now have grouse leking, breeding and raising young wihtin the forest boundaries. The main areas to look for grouse are in the Aberhirnant, Celyn and Penaran areas. These are three upland plantations with large areas of open heathland and moorland.
Mammals: We have information about Roe deer and Fallow deer
Birds: We have information about Black grouse
Habitats: This is an interesting area for future colonisation of wildlife as an experimental 150 hectares has been set up for birch colonisation. This was achieved by placing birch laden branches in the brash matts(made from harvesting)to allow the wind to carry the seed over the site. This process is expected to take years but is an easy and hopefully effective way to produce broadleaf woodland for “free”. It is envisaged that this will also benefit the wildlife in the area such as song birds and black grouse. There is not much to see yet but over the next few years we should expect to see the small birch seedlings taking hold. This will be the biggest area of broadleaf ever to be established in The Snowdonia National Park.
