Wildlife at Alwen

Hiraethog Forest
Denbighshire
Wales
Cerrigydrudion is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: SH955530
A Meadow Brown butterfly (Maniola jurtina) in Bourne woodThis is an area in which the majority of the trees are productive conifer plantation.

Mammals: We have information about Red squirrel

Birds: The goldcrest is one of Britain’s smallest birds. The birds are green while the male has an orange crest, the female has a yellow one. They feed on insects and flies. The goldcrest population is affected by a long harsh winter and to counter this they usually lay two broods of 7-10 eggs in one season. The goldcrest builds a hanging nest of moss and spiders webs, attaching it to the underside of a conifer branch. We have information about Black grouse

Insects and reptiles: There is an abundance of insect life in the area as it is close to Llyn Brenig.

Habitats: This is an area which will be managed to promote the habitat for Black Grouse and Red Squirrel, being in close proximity to Clocaenog Forest. There will be improved open/riparian zones though broadleaf replanting will be limited as this favours the grey squirrel.

How to get there:
Follow the A5 to Cerrigydrudion and then take the B4501 north from there.
