Wildlife at Hafod

Ceredigion
Wales
Cwmystwyth and Devil's are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: SN 768 736
A LARGE SPRING BEECH SILHOUETTED BY STRONG SUNSHINEThe Hafod estate is an amazing woodland that has been manipulated and planted with some extremely interesting and rare tree and plant species. Here Kites and buzzard are common with the more smaller bird species frequenting the oak woodland such as pied flycatchers and greater spotted woodpeckers. The whole forest is a PAWS site (plantation on an ancient woodland site) and as such the intention is to manage the forest to encourage more broadleaf woodland using sensitive methods of thinning. The main thinning is being carried out by horses, work which can be seen most days.

Birds: We have information about Red kite

Insects and reptiles: Butterflies and moths survive in some of the more open habitats. Some of the more common and rare species are as follows Common Blue, Small pearl bordered fritillaries, Dark green Fritillaries, Small, heath, Peacock, Red Admiral, Speckled wood, Meadow brown, Ringlet, Meadow brown, Large skipper, Brimstone, Small skipper, Small tortoiseshell and Purple hairstreak. The cow field and the area below the Hafod office are the best two places to look for these species. We have information about Large heath and Pearl-bordered fritillary
