Innerleithen is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: NT334370
RED SQUIRRELCaberston is a relatively young forest, with large area of conifers. The hill tops are open moor with deep heather which links the forest well to the surrounding grouse moors.

Mammals: This is an ideal forest to see both grey and red squirrels. The greys are most likely to be seen in the beech and scots pine woodland next to Innerleithen. Reds can be seen throughout the coniferous trees, their feeding stations can be found under the cone bearing trees. We have information about Red squirrel

Birds: Look out for coniferous seed eaters such as crossbills. You may see them drinking at puddles on the road.

Insects and reptiles: Adders and common lizards can be seen on the south facing open screes. Stick to the paths and roads to avoid disturbing these striking reptiles. We have information about Adder

How to get there:
From Innerleithen High Street (A72) take the B709 (starting at the Bank of Scotland). Parking is on the right hand side and the access footpath starts a few metres from this car park and enters the forest via the stone bridge.

Foot access only on this footpath - Horse access is further along the public road and via a natural ford which is accessible only when the river is not in flood.

Another horse access point is found beyond the Innerleithen Golf Course Club house. Follow the B709 along for another mile.
