RED SQUIRRELLarge woodland car park sheltered by sand dunes, adjacent to Burghead Bay. It gives easy access to the shore for watching a great variety of sea ducks and waders, especially in winter.

Mammals: Look out for the remains of cones nibbled by red squirrels. To see them scamper up tree trunks and leap from branch to branch, you're best to go when few visitors are about. We have information about Red squirrel

Birds: Winter birdwatchers have a good chance of seeing common and velvet scoters, and long-tailed and eider ducks. Waders include dunlin, redshank, ringed plover and bar-tailed godwit.

How to get there:
By car - From A96 at Forres take the B9011 to Kinloss, then B9089 (Burghead). Entrance is signposted 6 miles (10km) on left.
From Elgin take the A96 west, then B9013 (Burghead). At College of Roseisle turn left and follow signs. Entrance is 2 miles (3km) on right.
There is a small charge of £1.00 to park your car in the car park, which is used towards the upkeep of the picnic area.
