Elgin is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: NJ180630
Quarrelwood commands a hilltop position overlooking Elgin, the Moray Firth and the surrounding countryside. The wood is on the site of an ancient semi natural Oakwood which has had some underplanting of Beech and conifers. It is now the home of many woodland birds and mammals. Also located in the wood is a small quarry complex which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the very rare reptile fossils found there.
Mammals: The wood is home to a variety of small mammals, including woodmice, hedgehogs and red squirrels. There's a fair chance of seeing roe deer early and late in the day when it's quiet. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer
Birds: The oak, beech and conifer mix attracts many species of small birds, including tits, wren, siskin and willow warbler. Listen out for the drumming of the great spotted woodpecker and the mewing call of the buzzards that circle above the edge of the wood.
Insects and reptiles: In summer look out for Speckled Wood butterflies fluttering through the dappled shade at the path edges.
How to get there: By car - See access points for Leggat Car Park and Brumley Brae Car Park. The Woodland Park can also be accessed on foot from Elgin.
