Wildlife at Raasay Forest
Highland
Scotland
Inverarish, Brochel, Isle of Skye, and Sconser are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NG 564 365
There are two areas of forest on Raasay. One is surrounding the main village of Inverarish and the other is at the north end of the island, near Brochel. Both are mostly mature, conifer forest.
The forest near Brochel is gradually being harvested. This area will be returned to native, broadleaved trees after this work has been completed.
There is an extensive network of footpaths over the whole island. Some of these are waymarked paths through forests, others are coastal or remote, more rugged paths.
There are breathtaking views everywhere!
Look out for some of Raasay's special wildlife. There are seals, otters, porpoises and many sea birds to be spotted.
Mammals: When you visit Raasay, look out for otters, seals, porpoises and occasionally dolphins around the coast and shores. Raasay also has its own species of vole which occurs on the island - the Raasay vole. We have information about Red deer
Birds: Raasay is of course a great place to see sea birds. However, golden eagles can sometimes be spotted above the forest and occasionally sea eagles either soaring or at the shore. Buzzards and ravens are also often seen. We have information about Golden eagle and White-tailed eagle
Insects and reptiles: We have information about Pearl-bordered fritillary Habitats: Raasay has some areas of planted forest and a few native trees. The island is however, dominated by rough grazing and moorland.
How to Get There: From the Isle of Skye take the ferry from Sconser to Raasay. Follow the unclassified road to either Inverarish or contiue to Brochel, at the north end of the island.
