Wildlife at Kylerhea

Highland
Scotland
Kylerhea, Glenelg, Kinloch, Kyleakin, Broardford, and Isle Of Skye are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NG 786 211
OTTERKylerhea is a fairly young, mixed conifer plantation on the slopes above the Kylerhea narrows. This is an atmospheric place with breathtaking views and the opportunity to see a variety of coastal wildlife - including otters, seals and many sea birds.

Mammals: Kylerhea has a diverse terrain from mountain to moorland, woodland to sea shore to see and so has a wide range of wildlife. You can find red deer on the hillside, roe deer and foxes in the wood. There are also bank voles, common shrews, rabbits, pippistrelle bats, stoats and weasels. We have information about Red deer and Roe deer

Birds: Golden eagles soar over the mountains, buzzards nest in the lower slopes. Short-eared, tawny and barn owls take wing at dusk. Ring ouzel, snow bunting, ptarmigan, ravens, red grouse and wheater are on the tops and moors. In the woodland are chaffinch, bullfinch, crossbill, greenfinch, redpoll, twite, sparrowhawks, merlin, cuckoo, spotted-flycatcher and many others. We have information about Golden eagle and White-tailed eagle

Insects and reptiles: Many butterflies are seen here including common blue, red admiral, large white, tortoishell, pearl bordered fritillary and Scotch argus. We have information about Adder and Pearl-bordered fritillary

Habitats: We have information about Upland bog

How to get there:
Either take the summer ferry from Glenelg on the mainland over to Kylerhea. Or, from the A850 on Skye, 3 miles west of the Skye bridge, take the unclassified (and very steep) road to Kylerhea.
