Kinloch Carpark

(Average user rating3 unrated 3/5)

About Kinloch Carpark

Kinloch carpark is set in an open area of native woodland.

There are two walks from this carpark. One is a circular, waymarked walk to the deserted township of Leitir Fura. There is also a rough, indistinct path on the hillside above the coast to Kylerhea.

Kinloch is also very interesting archaeological area.

How to get there:

Myself and my son walk this route every evening - unless the midgies are really bad, it's great but we would like to see more family activities through the summer such as the gruffalo event to be held in Balmacara in July.

We visited Kinloch and decided to take longer of the two walks (2.5 hrs as opposed to 1hr) as detailed on the information board in the car park. The walk was highly enjoyable, up until we reached the township of Leitir Fura. At this point we had a look around and looked at the information board to find out our location. This board was highly unhelpful in this respect, giving absolutely no indication of where we were in relation to the circular route we were following. As we had only been walking for barely an hour, on a supposed 2.5hr walk we decided to follow to Drovers path, believing this to be the correct route, to bring us back around to the car park. There were no signs to the contrary and especially as Leitir Fura was not marked on either of the two previous information boards, there was no indication that this was not part of the circular route. Not only is there little resemblance of a path to follow, but there is no signage after Leitir Fura. Unaware of our mistake we continued along this ever worsening route, expecting to see signs directing us through the woods. No such signs existed, it was only having walked for a further hour, that we realised that this was clearly not a "circular" route back to Kinloch car park. At which point we had no option, but to turn around and retrace our steps. This is highly frustrating, and in my opinion a complete waste of time. Upon reaching Leitir Fura again, we double checked the signage and it did not indicate that we had not chosen the circular walk. This signage along the Drovers path, is highly misleading and inappropriate. Sort it out!!

Thanks for your comments - it would seem you visited at the wrong time. All Leiter Fura interpretation is currently being upgraded and will be in place before the summer. The work will include a full refit of the Kylerhea otter hide, new orientation and interpretation at LF village and at the car park trail head. This will also include a review of existing waymarkers and so the feedback is helpful to us.
