Wildlife at Kinloch Carpark

Kinloch
Highland
Scotland
Isleornsay, Skulamus, Broadford, Kyleakin, and Isle Of Skye are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NG 703 161
NATIVE ASHKinloch carpark is set in an open area of native woodland. The ruined walls of a traditional "blackhouse" building have been partially restored here (with descriptive text and illustrations). Two walks lead off from this car park. One is a circular, waymarked walk to the deserted township of Leitir Fura. There is also a rough, indistinct path on the hillside above the coast to Kylerhea. An Information board at the car park presents a map of the routes and details the history of the site.

Mammals: Red and roe deer live in the neighbouring plantation. We have information about Red deer and Roe deer

Birds: Sand martins, herons and hen harriers nest in the area.

Insects and reptiles: Adders bask on exposed rocks amongst bracken on hot summer days. Look out for slow worms too. The surrounding wood has 15 different butterflies including small pearl bordered fritillary. We have information about Adder and Pearl-bordered fritillary

Habitats: The trees surrounding the carpark are a mixture of planted conifers and native birch woodland with bracken and wild flowers - bluebell, primrose, dog violet and wood anemone.

How to get there:
From the A850 Kyleakin to Portree road, turn south at Skulamus along the A851. After four miles, Kinloch carpark is signposted. Turn east and follow the signs along the forest road to the carpark.
