Wildlife at Erchite Great Glen Forest
Highland
Scotland
Dores, Inverfarigaig, Foyers, Whitebridge, and Inverness are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NH 390 108
Erchite is a mixed, planted conifer forest along the slopes above Loch Ness. It has many stands of mature conifers including a high proportion of Norway spuce trees. Norway spruce cones are a favourite food for red squirrels, so there is a very healthy population of red squirrels in Erchite.
There are seven small carparks just off the B852, adjacent to Erchite forest. There are views of Loch Ness from all of them, most also have picnic tables and some of them are near Erchite's forest tracks.
Mammals: As well as many of the woodland animal species, Erchite wood has healthy populations of red squirrels and badgers. The wood has to be carefully managed to avoid disturbance to these animals. The squirrel habitat is protected and badger setts are protected and avoided during tree felling. We have information about Red squirrel, Red deer, Roe deer and Badger
Insects and reptiles: We have information about Adder and Pearl-bordered fritillary
How to get there: Erchite forest is adjacent to the B852 between Dores and Inverfarigaig. There is a limited bus service from Inverness to Foyers that stops at Dores, Inverfarigaig and, by request, at other sensible stopping places.

What's of interest
Red squirrels in Erchite have been given a 'helping hand' by the Forestry Commission. High level ropes have been put up across the B852 on trees to help the squirrels to cross the road in safety.
