Wildlife at The Bin Forest

Aberdeenshire
Scotland
Huntly and Keith are the nearest towns or villages.
OS Grid Reference: NJ 505 418
People enjoying a walk through autumn woodlandThe Bin is a mixed conifer woodland with a good variety of walks. Trees have been here since the 1830s, when the Duke of Gordon started the first planting. In June through to August the walks can be good for seeing wild flowers. Points of interest: The 'Gallon of Water' is a pool of water near the top of Bin Hill. The 'Gallon of Water' stays wet all year round. Local people used to use the water as a cure for whooping cough. There are two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the forest. One for geology and another is a mire or wetland. Groups can access the SSSIs by contacting the Forest District (for contact details see below). Maps for the walks can be obtained from Huntly Tourist Information Centre (open summer months) or the Forest District.

Mammals: Look out for occassional red squirrel and roe deer. Roe deer can be found in the open glades in the woodland. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer

Birds: There are many birds of prey and common forest birds found in the Bin.
Let us know what you see!

Insects and reptiles: In many of the fire dams we have newts.
Butterflies that can be seen include Red Admirals, Meadow Browns,Scotch Argus, Mountain Ringlets and much more.

Habitats: The Bin is a great place to see wildflowers as the soil is basic. In August look out for wild orchids too!
